What are the odds of needing surgery for crohnies? I'm just curious... I've read up to 85% of people will end up with having surgery.... I just wanted some in put.
After I was diagnosed my GI told me that as many of 75% of patients will have some form of crohns related surgery, out of these, up to 50% will need a second surgery at some point.
It really depends if your disease can be controlled quickly. Those of us who required surgery either didn't respond well to meds, had complications (fistulas, perforations, strictures, etc) or surgery was seen as a means to help heal/slow down damage (like a temporary ostomy).
And remember, surgery could be something very simple like scraping/closing a fistula, possibly putting in a seton, or having a hemeroid or two dealt with. It doesn't necessarily mean that 60% of us are opened up wide.
I don't know the percentage but from those I see on here who have them, the bag is actually a blessing. . . its all the sh!t they deal with leading up to the bag that we should be scared of. I'm sure all of them have had at least 2 major resection surgeries.
Sorry for going off topic, but maybe your should post something in the ostomy forum to discuss your fear or questions you may have. I'd be interested in hearing about them, since I consider my ostomy a blessing. :ghug:
I know people who have had multiple surgeries and people who never have. I had it for twenty years before my surgery mainly through mis diagnosis. It's luck of the draw to some extent I reckon. With the right meds at the right time I truly believe its manageable. Never just hold off going to the docs and getting the treatment you need, no matter how hard it can be sometimes!
i haven,t and hopefully won,t need any, follow your drs advice be regimented with meds, don,t smoke and just remember there will be a better answer to crohns in the future!hopefully near.
