Hi All,
I had my entire large intestine removed over 5 years ago and have had an ileostomy ever since. About 1.5 years ago I started experiencing mild crohn's symptoms and that lead me here. I found the juicing forum and decided to give it a try. I liked the idea that I could get all my daily vegetables and more in one glass. I liked the idea that it was pre-digested which means you get more nutrients as your intestines don't need to do the work of separating the fibre from the micro nutrients.
I read several posts, did my homework, bought a high quality masticating juicer and away I went. The taste was awful and wasn't sure I would last a week. I then found an article that stated that lemon helps negate the taste of the green's. I made that change and found it tolerable.
I then bought a juicing book that lists all the fruits/vegetable/herbs etc and talks about their benefits. I then came up with my daily recipe based on the most bang for my buck.
Have I noticed a difference? Without a doubt. I have been juicing for over a year now. I am the kind of guy who when I decide to do something I do it. What that means is I juice every single day. I allow myself to miss one day a week for a good reason or if I am out of town but otherwise I make sure I juice as part of my day. I often tell people I get more vegetable goodness in one day than I used to get in one month.
My energy level is way up and I just feel better overall. The biggest change is a fistula I have (a leftover from my crohn's that I just don't feel like getting fixed) has actually closed. It was open off and on for 4 years and within 2 weeks of juicing it just stopped leaking (a very slow manageable leak but a leak none the less). My crohn's symptoms also all but disappeared.
I took the time to write all this because I believe juicing has changed my health and I feel it will help me stay healthy and possibly live longer. I was always one who just couldn't get my vegetables in and now I get them and then some.
My daily recipe (based on much reading).
2 big handfuls of baby carrots
1 big handful of Kale
1/2 cup of spinach
1 Apple
1 Lemon
1 Pepper
2 scallions
Kale and Carrots are super foods.
I also have a sweet tooth but most sweets can cause symptoms. Someone posted this recipe on facebook and I have been using it as a dessert or quick energy food ever since. This isn't juicing related, just thought I would share.
+No Bake Energy Bites
1.5 cup (dry) oatmeal
1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup unsweetened peanut butter
2/3 cup honey
1 tsp. vanilla
Mix wet first. Mix in dry. Use cookie spoon to roll into balls. Yummy.
