I was wondering if anyone knows any solutions or tips to help the ostomy bag adhere better?

Hi Mke1
I always find that putting a heating pad or warm towel on directly after you apply the flange helps. For at least 20 minutes.
Hope that helps! :)

The first thing I would ask is exactly why you think it isnt sticking well? Do you have hair or creases in the skin?

Can you explain what happens and why you think it is happening?

There are some skin barriers that in addition to creating a protective film on the skin also leave a sticky residue that help the adhesive stick to the skin better.

I use a hair dryer to make sure that the skin is completely dry and also to warm the base plate so that it will stick better.

Also some adhesives are better on some people - it might be worth trying some other brands of ostomy bag.

Try different brands. I tried coloplast and it came off within a day. Then I tried convatec and now I'm getting about a week or so per flange/bag

That's what I mean about different bags suiting different people! :) I've tried all of them that are available here in Oz and Coloplast works by far the best for me.

Hello. I found the same thing with the Salts product. It comes with a barrier ring and paste. The adhesive and ring simply don't stick, in my experience, not for more than a day anyway. I'm currently using the hollister new image flange and barrier ring. The ring is not hard plastic like the Salts product, its very soft and sticky like plumbers putty and will last a week. Not only that, it's flexible so doesn't come off when you bend over at the waste.

I just found out my reversal is coming up this Tuesday, but I already ordered another 2 months supply of Hollister stuff. I wonder if anyone would want a donation?

Hollister Adhesive spray on the back of the wafer. Wait a few minutes, then apply to dry skin. I've been using it for 26 yrs. works great. go to the hollister site for more information.

When I had a stoma I found that wearing an elastic belt that clips to the base for a few hours to keep tension on it made it stick on a lot firmer

I use the belts - can I take it off after a few hours? I'm wearing mine all the time and it does irritate me. So once it's all stuck I don't need the belt?

If they are irritating you, dont bother. It's mainly used for people to feel more secure. Sometimes if you have a real issue with adhesiveness, they help.

Lots of good ideas here. I use the Eakin large protective barriers over the skin and then put on the appliance. This really helps protect the skin and can really increase wear times. Some pouches don't seem to stay on as long as others though so you may have to get some different samples to see what stays on the longest. Also, if your pouch has a flat wafer (same thing as flange) and your stoma is short, you may want to try a convex wafer. I am currently using the Hollister lock n roll pouches (one piece) with the large Eakin seal. when I change the bag, I make sure the skin is completely clean and dry, then put on a little protective powder, then the Eakin seal, then the bag. I routinely get seven full days of use before needing a new bag. I also use a clip on the pouch instead of using the lock and roll mechanism. This adds a little extra length to the pouch which I like, and seems more secure. I recently tried the coloplast one piece. I really liked how the bag closes, but I never got more than a few days of wear time, so sticking with the hollister pouch now.

Hi
I find the 3M cavilon wipes great to add stickiness to the skin. I the apply an eakin seal and coloplast sensura 1 piece. I use the coloplast brava tapes to add security and then wear the belt for a couple of hours. I also wear an ostomysecrets wide belt everyday. I love how it keeps everything secure and hidden and keeps the bag off my skin ( find it hot and sweaty when bag is on my skin). I am sure there are other companies that do these bands. You can have a look at

I think a lot of appliance application becomes a ritual, I know I place my hand over freshly applied bag so the warmth helps it adhere - my Stoma nurse told me to always give my new bag a hug!

It's. matter of finding what works for you

I like to use adhesive spray. I always use a barrier ring. And sometimes I use hyperfix although. React to it, it helps my bag stick brilliantly

So do I, both on the skin around my stoma and on the stoma bag plate (before I remove the protective cover).

;) Hey MKE! Okay, here's my ritual. It's a bit OCD--but it works! I put the flange and the seal on a medium-set heating pad. Then I take my totally naked shower (bliss!). After drying off, I then put 2 kleenexes around my stoma to super-duper dry the skin. Then I apply a very thin layer of calamine lotion around the stoma and surrounding skin. Then I use a layer of stoma powder, spray with barrier spray, another thin squirt of powder followed by the spray. Then I take a kleenex and wipe off the stoma. Then I smash the nice warm barrier ring and really push it around the stoma and skin. Then I put the flange over it and hold for about 30 seconds. Done! I use 2 piece Hollister. THEN afterwards I put on my lycra big undies for a while to really hold things. After I am ready to put on regular clothes I then put on "regular" undies. I know it sounds craaaaazy--but my ritual works for me! I change everything on Wednesdays and Sundays. I think I've had 3 leaks in 11 months--and the leaks were early on following surgery. Maybe this is helpful to you--good luck. Snap:ysmile:

Hey Snap! Ok, maybe just a bit ocd. With all the care you are giving your skin I'm surprised you have to change the bag every 3-4 days, but maybe that's normal with a 2 piece system?

:poop: Ohhhh yeah, normal with my volcanic ile! I have an extreme liquid output (been having issues with a bit o' dehydration lately--but this too shall pass!) I don't want to risk changing once a week since my output is so liquid---I've got thin Irish skin that has been abused by heavy prednisone use--and I'm hoping that is definately in the past. So I'll welcome my OCD with open arms rather than having skin issues! Good luck! Dana

Yep I have an 'abnormal' Stoma (hang on is there ever a normal Stoma) that opens onto skin, so I change my one piece every one to two days. Any longer than this and the skin at the opening becomes very sore and burnt. Unfortunately I have extremely watery output. The thickest it gets is like smoothie consistency ( hope you are not smoothly fans, if so , sorry) but is usually water consistency. After two days I can smell poop, and am getting sore and itchy around Stoma.

:ack: LOL Jaano! Yup---I got a smoothie too--and like you, not very often. I really can't smell poop--I go by feel--doesn't take long to notice the appliance wearing out--even the bottom of the pouch starts to wear kinda thin from a constant acid-like output. Dana
