Hey, I am new on this site and I have seen several posts about ostomy belts. How exactly do they work and how comfortable are they? I have had some problems with leaks and I wondered if a belt would help. I use the hollister adaptor rings and the hollister wafer. I would really like to extend the use of the wafer because they are not covered by my insurance. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The belt is VERY comfortable. i now use Convatec wafers but I use the Hollister belt - its very comfortable. With the rings, i think the Eakin reings from Convatec work better tha Hollister's do - in my experience.

Thank you. I have been looking at belts online. I saw one that works with the bag going sideways across the abdomen. I just want to stop the leaks that I have been having for the last few months. I thought I had a bad batch of wafers, but I am on my second box now and I still have leaks. It isn't so bad when it happens at home, but it is a bummer when it happens at work.

Don't order the stealth belt!! If that's the one you were looking at, I got one and because your bag sits sideways, your output just pools around your stoma because it has nowhere else to go.

If you're having leaks, why don't you call the manufacturers and get some free samples to try? Another brand might fix that problem for you. I've always found that all the major ones are more than willing to help you out on the phone and suggest things to try.

Are the leaks all coming from approximately the same area? If so, you might have some unevenness or an indentation in the area that you are sticking the wafer onto. I have a barely perceptable indentation that allows liquid to work its way under the base of the bag.

Welcome to the stoma stubforum DJAllen2!

I havent used a belt personally, but I may try one. I agree with Nyx (Cindy) that calling all the manufacturers for samples would be a great idea if you are having leaks. Do you have a stoma nurse by the way?

I see in your post in 'my story' that you are going in the first part of 2012 to have your rectum removed. Something alot of us are probably going to have to have done at some point. If you can get samples before you go in it would be great. Then as you are recovering, you can try different supplies while you are at home recovering. (always best to have a blow out at home isnt it?)

Thanks for all the info. I will call different companies to get samples. My leaks always vary. I have been online looking at belts and the stealth looks complicated. I have seen the slim belts as well, but I don't know how they would be used with the bags I have..Hollister drainable pouches. I just need to find a dependable product. All of my ostomy supplies are out-of-pocket because my insurance will not pay for "disposable" items. So going thru several wafers and rings each week can become expensive.
