I had a colonoscopy last week, they tried to do a balloon dilation in my ileum but could not get through. Since then I've had pain in my lower right side and right across my lower abdomen whenever I stand up and start to move around. If I'm sitting or laying down it's fine. And once I'm up and moving it goes away after a few minutes. Has anyone experienced this? I haven't had this before despite a number of procedures.....my doctor is on vacation of course and I have no one to ask. Thanks!

Hey Riley

When I had my colonoscopy last year I had some pain on movement for about two weeks after the procedure. We think this was because I had a stricture which they attempted to push their way through and it might be a simular thing with you. If you have an IBD nurse you can contact you might want to give them a call just to check things. Heat might give you some relief from the pain. If it gets any worse I would advise getting it checked out just as a precaution.

I would get it checked out. I had a colonoscopy a couple of months ago and experienced some discomfort afterwards, it went away but 4 days later I had an intestinal bleed which was subsequenly found to be due to a perforated bowel caused by the colonoscopy. This would be worst case scenario. I had to have blood transfusions and surgery because of it. As I said that would be worst case scenario. Listen to your body, if the pain stays and it doesn't feel right go to the hosppital that did the colonoscopy.

Have your bowel habits changed since the procedure? Obviously if they couldn't get the balloon through there is a stricture or scar tissue, it could just be irritated from them trying to do the procedure. I would get it checked out if you can. I think you would know right away or shortly after if you had a perforation, they are very painful and can lead to serious infection. Have you taken your temp recently?

I had a perforated bowel and I didn't know straight away. It took four days until I was passing blood and even then there was no pain. If in doubt seek medical advice.

In my experience I knew the second I woke up. But everyone is different

In addition to what everyone else has said, if your doctors determine the pain is not caused by a perforation or by the stricture being irritated, it's possible the pain is from the biopsies they took during the scope. They are taking a chunk of flesh out of you each time they biopsy, and once the pain meds wear off from the scope, it can really hurt! I had an upper endoscopy last November, and I could pinpoint for you the spot where they took a biopsy from my stomach. I'm not sure if stomach acid got into the wound and exacerbated it or what, but it was pretty painful for about a week. Just another thought as to what could be causing the pain.

It was the biopsy that caused my perforation. It took 4 days before I saw obvious signs of blood. If in doubt I really do recommend a visit to the doctor.
