I was wondering What pain medication (if any) you are on and how much you are taking a day/month. I my self am on percocet and it seems to be working OK. However it seems that I have to take more and more of it these day to get the same pain relief. I know you can build up a tolerance to it or maybe it is the time of year (cold and wet out in Washington State)

Do you have a stoma? If so, if you're having pain you should contact your doctor and see what's going on. You could have a hernia. Otherwise, I'm not sure why you posted this question in this subforum. Not that it's not a valid question...but might get more responses in another thread. For the record, I'm not on any meds at all.

There you go! Welcome to the forum anyway...hope you get an answer to your question :)

Hi Outpatient - You should be careful with Percocets (which are my FAVE btw!) because they can really slow down your digestive process and mess things up.

I am on Tramadol right now, which is not nearly as good as Perkies, but it's non-addictive and doesn't slow down the digestions like narcotics do.

I was on Tramadol but it did not help with the pain, so they put me on Percocet. It has turned out to be a good thing (as far as the slowing of the gut) I have a Stoma and go to the bathroom 10-14 times a day. So anything that will slow my bowl down is helpful

Wow, 10-14 times a day seems a lot to empty your bag. Does your doc or stoma nurse say this is a normal amount?

Yes, 10-15 times a day is a lot and my Dr's do know. It is a concern and they would like it to be less but I have had my Colon removed as well as 3 feet of small intestine so when ever i eat food passes through me in 30 minuets to an hour. I was told to eat many small meals throughout the day in hopes that I would absorb more from my food. In turn I am still in and out of the bathroom many times a day. But now it does not burn when I take a bowl movement and I am not sitting on the toilet half the day.

Hi Amy,

Unless Tramadol is a different formulation where you are, you need to be careful. Tramadol is a synthetic opiate and it can be addictive. The FDA challenged the manufacturers on this point and the guidance has now been changed. I find it also slows-up the digestive system just as much as the codine based drugs, but everyone is different.

WHS, Tramadol bunged me up something terrible and still didn't ease my pain. I now have a Butrans patch which lasts a week and whilst it doesn't take the pain away it makes it livable and doesn't slow me down too much - this is for back/sacroiliac/jaw/wrist/hand pain rather than guts.

Mark, thanks for that info. The tramadol does make me itch so I was wondering if it was an opiate derivative, as morphine and the others always make me itch too.

I did read somewhere that it must be tapered and not stopped cold so I need to read more about that and see what the taper rate is.
