pain on sneezing

Hi ,I had open surgery about 4 1/2 months ago to remove 1 metre of small to large intestine ,which left me with a 9 inch verticle scar . Is it normal to still get intense pain when sneezing and sometimes when using my abdominal muscles to sit up . Would appreciate some imput, as I hoped it should be all healed by now !

is it painful to touch? Is it still red? Does it hurt while resting? I was not having pain after 4 1/2 months, but thats just me.

Hi ekay ,thanks for replying . No its not red or hurting while resting but it is tender if i press on the scar or when I sneeze or cough makes me wonder if I have pulled or strained a muscle .

Bring your legs up to your stomach when you are about to sneeze, I had pnuemonia and sneezing and coughing so bad I pulled a muscle in my stomach holy **** did it hurt. So I found lifting my legs up towards my belly and held my arms around the shins. Hope that helps.

Good idea Pan, Also I have found that when sitting up from a lying postion. If you tilt your head all the way back wile you push yourself forward it take the pressure off the abdominal muscles.
Rob, was it better and then it got worse? Or has it been this way all along? When is your next follow-up? You could always put a call in the the doctor.

It was better then got worse about a month ago ,seeing the consultant 9th jan so will check with him thanks for the advice on getting up will try it out.

Pen thanks for your advice , will try the holding shins trick .Worse thing is I feel like i am coming down with a cold and dreading sneezing fits.

It sounds like you strain of some sort. I hope its not a hernia. But you would see a hernia.

Everyone heals from operations differently. Glad you are having this checked with doc. Sometimes scar tissue can cause trouble too. Try to rub the scar gently every day to alleviate scar tissue issues. This will get blood circulating to area and help it heal. Good luck!

Yeah thats what i thought as hernia would bulge outwards but maybe I am wrong .

Mickey cheers for your advice .
