Pancreatitis-how was yours diagnosed?

I was doing quite well with an elimination diet after enteral nutrition (EN) until the middle of Sept.

Then I started getting more fatigued, light-headed, and had more difficulty with thinking activities. Bloods showed low iron and TIBC. Then two weeks ago I started getting nausea again, then burning upper abdominal pain that would go straight through to my back. Then the pain started getting worse at night. I've lost three pounds in about 6 days. My lipase is twice normal. I'm booked for a CT scan with contrast. I'm not having the original IBD symptoms of lower abdominal pain, bloody loose stools, mucus, cramping, having BM's at night, etc.

If you had pancreatitis how was yours diagnosed and treated? What do they think caused it?

I recently started adding more fat to my diet (by more, a mean a small amount: 15-20 grams total for the day) to improve my energy levels as my formula had been a very low fat one. (I have always had trouble with fats; fats=gallbladder pain.) Could this be causing the problems that I am having?

Sarah's was diagnosed with bloods...very high amylase. Her's was definitely an extra intestinal manifestation of her Crohn's. She was actively flaring in her terminal ileum. Treating the Crohn's resolved the problem for her.

Hi DustyKat,
I was hoping that you would reply.
The CT is booked for tomorrow.:ywow:
I'm not sure whether to be glad or concerned to get in that soon. Of course, today I am feeling much better.

Fab to hear you are feeling better. :)

Good luck with the scan and let us know how you get on...:goodluck:

Thanks DustyKat,
The scan went well. I should get the results within a week. I had another bad night of pain last night, so at least I had the scan close to when I was still having symptoms.

Hey happy,

Good to hear the scan went well but it's a bummer that the pain is hanging around. :(

I hope the results give you solid answers and you can get relief!

Keep us posted, thinking of you.

No pain and no nausea for over 24 hours. Yay!
Also, the lipase has returned to normal and the CT was normal. Double yay!
Not sure what happened  but I don't care as I am feeling much better.
I have had problems with my gallbladder in the past, but despite many tests, no explanation was found. I think that I get a build-up of sludge sometimes that backs things up and raises my liver enzymes. This time perhaps it backed up the common duct with the pancreas, raising the lipase (and causing pain like this:  ).
Without the pain and nausea and now that my low iron is being treated with iron shots, I am expecting to be feeling great very soon. :emot-dance:
Thanks for following this thread DustyKat.

Fab news! :panda::panda::panda:

Here's to feeling better! :cheerss:

I wonder when pancreatitis is an EIM if you get these sudden attacks and settling that happen very quickly. The reason I say that is Sarah, pre diagnosis, would get the symptoms and then they would be gone in a few hours. When she was diagnosed with pancreatitis her amylase was through the roof, about 2500 IIRC, but the next day it was normal. Sure had the docs scratching their heads! Anyhoo just me musing...

Hi DustyKat,
Although I don't have a consensus of diagnosis as to what kind my IBD is, I too wonder about an EIM of pancreatitis, but for now all is Ok. If it keeps happening, I'll try to pursue it with the docs. I also have some meds for nausea and pain which will help me greatly during the night if there is a next time.
Thanks again for your help.

glad your doing better! my room mate in college had pancreatitis she couldn't eat anything with more then 25% fat. recently i've also had a lot of nausua and it been sticking in the back of my mind.
