panproctocolectomy in 11 days

Hi I am having my op on nov 15th at uchl london. I had an emergency ileostomy 18months ago and it changed my life as I had got very Ill very quickly, I have perianal fistulas that are causing me lots of problems and cannot b fixed hence the op. Unfortunately they are going to have open me up but hoping the epidural after is going to help with the pain relief. I live in Hertfordshire and have a little girl of 2.5.
I am pretty anxious and emotional about the op but also looking forward to getting it done and over with as the past 18 months have been hard work.

Hi Rachel,
Hope all goes well for you & your soon over your surgery. I had an epidural once & a self controlled morphine pump the other times. The epidural is great for pain relief but unfortunately severely restricts movement. Whereas morphine means they can get you out of bed walking next day & thats a major plus for me. However the morphine makes me itch like mad & gives me slight hallucinations which is a bit strange :lol:

Thanks grant, they are giving me a mobile epidural which means it blocks the middle section apparently so they say I should b up after 6hrs

I had an epidural that did not numb my legs, but the pain relief was only mediocre.

Hi I came home yesterday after 10days in hospital. Things went well but unfortunately the epidural didn't work very well so I had to switch to a pca for a few days. I had alot of weeping from my backside which is taking twice daily dressings and this area is v painful along with my tummy cut but lots of resting really helps. Being in my own bed def helps my scar is pretty close to were the flange is on the bag so currently having to make do and stick the edges with tape until the scar has healed more. All in all a pretty positive experience apart from the pain

Glad you are home! Sorry the pain management wasnt good though. How about now, have they got the pain under control for you?

My Stan was close to my incision as well. Truly a pain in the.....Stoma first, wound second my stoma nurse drilled into me!

Yey!!! I'm so glad it went ok!!! The bum weeping is to be expected.. It surprised me but it does get better! I just bought some night time panty liners to deal with it.

I hope the pain isn't too bad! Just take it easy. I loved sleeping all day!

Am on 3 different painkillers which seem to be doing the job. Even when I trim the flange it's still to close as I need to use the convec bags so just gonna have to wait I think as it's only one edge I'm not too worried as the wound is healing really well so don't think it will be too long before I can go without dressing on that small area. I did try some different bags while in hospital but they didn't work as well.
How long did it take before u had to stop having ur bum dressed?

Well it never was dressed. I had an ostomy bag placed over it while I had the drain in and then once that was removed I just had massive hospital pads placed in surgical knickers till about a week after I got home. They said it was healing nicely when I left but it's still draining discharge so I need to got for a pelvic scan to check for any collection. Pain in the arse.. never been meant more literally lol
