Ok so I've had a stoma bag for nearly two weeks now and weirdly I have just passed wind through my backside for the first time. I thought it was meant to come out of the bag? Is this normal? Help!?

Yes its normal well for me anyways. I totally fully used the restroom at least twice a day even with my ileostomy. Do you still have your rectum if so its trapped in there from surgery and now releasing and you get mucous and stuff that comes out which feels like you have to use the bathroom again. Same goes for jpouch after surgery.

Phew! yes, i still have my rectum :) Thanks for that Maria, it kinda freaked me out when it happened. At least I know to expect it from now on.

I still have a rectum. I have never passed wind, but do pass mucus several times a day. There are others here who also pass wind and some stool, though I don't understand it myself.

@ 2thFairy, its been awoke since u had ur surgery right? Do u still pass mucos several times a day. And is it like going to the bathroom as u would having a bm? Or is it uncontrollable?

I had my ileostomy done in January 2012. I pass a small amount of mucus each time I use the restroom. It is completely controlled and does not hurt at all like a bm in the past. No urgency in my case. Some people don't pass mucus at all, others only once or twice a week. In most cases it is controlled and painless, but some do have pain in the beginning if they have severe disease in the rectum.

I find I sometimes pass wind if my pouch has been overfull at night. I think excess wind and or stool is pushed down the 'down pipe'. Even though I can barely see this opening next to my stoma it is there and thats the only thing i can think is happening. It happens very rarely though. For you its probably wind from the op. I don't think its anything to worry about even if it continues. Just mention to your GI next visit.
Mucus poops I only have maybe once a month if that but i did have mucus diahorrea for a couple of days recently. I think an abscess in my rectum was tricking it into thinking it needed to be emptied, or maybe i just had a bug.
And how on earth is diahorrea spelt? I never get it right!

Thanks, yes I managed to ask a doc and he said its absolutely normal to pass wind and even mucus. Haha I've always struggled with that word too, but since I've got lots of it I thought I should learn it. Diarrhoea is the English way, and diarrhea is te American way to spell it. :p

Ah, that probably explains why I never get it right, confusion between the US and UK spelling. haha, maybe we should just call it diahorror.

They call them phantom poos. When I had my second surgery I had complications and was on ketamine which made me loopy. I can't remember it fully but I told the nurse I had the urge to poo and my wife ( who I'd never mentioned phantom poos to ) thought I was nuts bc I had a bag and couldn't poo. I tried and nothing happened but then the nurses explained to my wife that if you still have a rectum you still get discharge. I had it once every 2-3, weeks.
