Hello everyone, can't wait to start participating in discussions. But first, I've got to be the student.

Recently I was diagnosed with Crohn's. I was in Atlanta, GA (I travel for work, high stress job). On Thursday night I realized I was sick with some pain in my lower right abdomen. By Friday morning, I could hardly stand. Drove late to work and tried not to move too much the entire day. At some points, it was hard to even speak it hurt so bad. I tried to pop some Tylenol and Pepto and be done with it. Didn't work.

My flight was at 7PM, landing in AZ at about 8:30PM. I decided I can make the flight home to be with the family. This was, by far, the worst 4.5hr flight I had ever been on. I've broken my arm in a bad way once and the pain was nothing compared to this. When I landed, my dad took me to the ER and after a few hours they told me I had IBD. Then the next morning, they were pretty sure it was Crohn's. I was in the hospital for 3 days, over Halloween, with the pain slowly receding. The hospital told me to go for a followup which I have not had time for yet but they did give me a prescription for Asacol. They didn't give me any documentation on Chron's and how to take care of it (which I assume would be in the followup in the near future).

It's been about 14 days and I haven't changed much of my diet. The doctors said I can continue nearly my exact diet and take Asacol and be fine. For the most part, that has been true. I've felt a bit of pain here and there but really, life has been back to normal. I drink beer, I eat pizza, I play volleyball 8hrs a day, I feel pretty OK. The only thing they warned me is that I should probably stay away from raw fruits/veggies. This is a sad request as I had just gotten in to these. And every now and then (less seldom) I feel the need to go to the bathroom with a sense of urgency.

My first questions as a member (and I will search the forums too) are, am I going about this the wrong way? I have a high-stress traveling job and the only time I've gotten the pain bad enough to effect me is when the job was at its worst. Is it just stress induced for me and can I go on without changing my diet?

What questions should I be prepared to ask the doctor on my followup?

Is it possible this can get worse over time or can I keep living my passive lifestyle? From reading what I've read, it really seems like I shouldn't ignore this as much as I am. I don't really eat healthy. Fried foods, beer, candy, these are all parts of my diet (albeit not every day).

Thank you much for your advice - it's needed and appreciated.

It certainly can get worse over time and ignoring it is the worst thing you can do. I had a very quiet remission period similar to you (but with a slightly more careful diet) for about 7 years in my twenties. It didn't last and I paid big time for years of not paying attention.

Tread lightly.

Diet is very important. So is medication. I've been successful with just diet in the past but it's not typically a life-long remedy and you MUST follow your restrictions closely without exception if you really want it to work, assuming you find a diet that works for you. Not everyone does.

Hi natdm and welcome to the Crohns forum, although I'm sorry you're having trouble. I'm sure it's all come as a bit of shock to you as it seems your Crohns has been diagnosed so quickly! Lots of us suffer for years before any diagnosis is made so we have a bit if time to get our head around it.

I'm not an expert but I thought that Asacol is usually prescribed for colitis. It's really important to get to a followup appt soon so you're sure to be on the right meds!

Crohns affects everyone slightly differently, but if you DO have it, you will slowly over time find your 'triggers' There is NO WAY I can stay away from all fruit and veg as I love them. When I am well, I can eat them raw in moderation. When I'm not well, I totally lay off the raw stuff. Some foods will irritate me more than others. I've never had a problem with candy or alcohol, but again if I'm not well or having a flareup, I really don't feel like eating or drinking much anyway.

As for stress....well, I know that I certainly get worse when I am stressed. I have been told that I also suffer from IBS so when I'm stressed, if I start running to the bathroom all the time or am in pain, I'm not neccessarily having a flare up of Crohns. Sometimes I just have to slow down and relax a bit (if possible) and watch what I eat for a few days until things calm down.

As to whether it will get worse over the years, the answer is...who knows? I was diagnosed when I was 13, was VERY ill for quite a long time, had a bowel resection and was in and out of hospital for about 8 years. Then I had nothing more than a few minor flare ups over the next 20 years!! Now the past 2 years I have been bad again and had my second small bowel resection and am still not well. With Crohns there is no set pattern. We're all different.

I suggest you read up on Crohns a bit, read peoples experiences from this forum and start making a list of ANY questions, no matter how trivial, and tackle your gastroenterologist about it.

I REALLY do hope you feel better soon and get at least most of your questions answered. And remember we're all here if you need us!

Hi Nat. I think it would be worth getting more opinions on the staying away from fruits and veggies thing, seems like the healthiest thing for the digestive tract to me, especially juices(juices are a lot less invasive too).

Also, while i know you can tolerate pizza and beer right now, i would try to cut down if i were you, i used to be able to tolerate them too, til i overdid it :). Anyway best of luck and welcome to the forum.

Oo Snowday xx, with Crohns and colitis, you have to treat your intestines like they are an open wound, especially in a flare. Anything smooth and soft will go through the intestines without causing further damage. Anything rough, like veg, seeds on fruits (like strawberries), nuts or any skins will only aggrevate an already diseased area. Look up a low residue diet for more info.

Hi natdm, I read and read about Crohn's when I was first diagnosed. You will pick up lots of information and advice as you go. I am still learning. It was very scary in the beginning but knowledge helps.

Good Luck, Kaz xxx

Hello Nat and welcome to the family.

Kaz is right about the raw fruits and veggies. It's okay to eat them cooked or even canned for a lot of people.

Asacol works for Crohn's and colitis, so long as the only areas you need to treat are in the colon and/or the terminal ilium. So don't fret that you were given the wrong meds. Chances are, your doc knows his stuff! :D
