I'm on the pill only because of how heavy and painful my periods become. We don't know why my periods are so painful though and I was wondering if that could be something to do with the IBD?

Also, can being on the pill (microgynon 30) affect the IBD - make it worse or anything?

I realise my explaining of questions is a bit rubbish and I apologise. Just let me know if you need more explaining.

I am on the pill, because painkillers don't help my periods so the doctor said the pill will regulate my period and make it less heavy and less painful - which it worked to begin with, but with the IBD, it's difficult to tell if it's the IBD, or the periods.

IBD does increase the risk of blood clots and the pill increases that risk again. Ideally you should be on a progesterone free pill (also known as the mini pill) which vastly cuts the risk of blood clots. Have a chat with your GP or the Nurse, I find the latter more helpful and knowledgeable when it comes to contraception! I am also on the pill due to bad periods and just been switched to the mini-pill, so far so good. The mini pill is likely to cut the amount of periods you get (you take it every day, so no 7 day break), and may stop them alltogether. As weird and un-natural as that sounds to me, I was assured it's quite healthy to have no periods so I am letting myself be guided by the professionals on that one. Despite my misgivings no/less periods would be wonderful.

Lots of ladies on here do say their IBD gets worse when they are on their period. I am undiagnosed so i can't comment on that :ghug:

My periods have pretty much always been bad so satisfied there is no underlying cause. Did yours become bad after being fairly normal for a long time? Were any investigations done as to the possible cause or did they just put you on the pill? It may be worth considering asking to see a gynecologist if no investigations were done. All I had was an ultrasound before going onto meds, to check for any abnormalities, so not invasive at all. I know sometimes a procedure called a Laparoscopy is done when you have IBD and bad periods to make sure everything is as it should be inside.

Edit: Just seen from your other posts you are also undiagnosed. In which case I would push for a Gyne referral. Sometimes cysts on the bowel or other lady parts can get big enough to fuse the different parts together, and thus can cause issues on both areas.

It seems a lot of people on here have worse times when on their period.

I have pretty heavy periods with bad cramping. I take Ortho Evra (the patch) and I put a patch on once a week for 12 weeks and every 3 months have a period. It cuts down on the really hard times I have on the period b/c I only have to deal with it a handful of times a year. It's helped me out a lot.

I can't answer the question about BC messing with the IBD because I don't know, but I couldn't see it being too much of an issue or they'd probably strongly suggest against it.
