Hey everyone,
Im home after 6 days in hospital , due to colonosvopy prep gone wrong.
Started taking the prep and it made me vomit a lot, followed by lots and lots of bloody D. Spent the day in the toilet and generally feeling rubbish.
Woke the next day feeling worse , very dizzy, shaky, racing heart. Was due colonoscopy at 1pm but after fainting getting out of the bath at 11am my partner took me to the hospital.
They attempted to do the colonoscopy with sedation but had to stop as it was far to painful for me (also fainted on the way to the room)
Was addmitted to a ward and taken to have xrays. After which on the way back to the room started vomiting/shaking uncontroably and fainted out of the chair , came to and was surrounded by nurses and doctors being injected and with tubes in me (really scary as before this crohns i have never really been sick) They did blood tests and found out i had lost a lot of blood and needed a transfusion (1st one) and there was signs of inflamation and infection. So after a week in hospital/3 pints of blood/lots of painkillers/numerous drips and 2 diffrent types of antibiotics im home.
Im being refered to someone else now.
Really hoping things are going to get easier cause it's fair to say that after my 2nd hospital stay of 2011 , im kinda at rock bottom :(
Anyone else have this type of problem with the prep.
Terrified of having to go through it again

This prep made me vomit a lot too, however, I never had any other problems that you had. I hope you are feeling better soon and they can get everything straightened out. Hang in there!

I have had a few scopes with the prep Pico Salax... it is my fave prep, only one cup the day before (with follow up of 4 cups of water) and one in the early morning day of. Orangy taste, best I ever had. So strange how one can be so sick from it and I find it way better than Kleen prep, 4 litres of salty crap, makes me ill just thinking of it. Also day of my scopes, they give you 3
needles and put me out and wake up perfectly fine. My worse thing is not being able to eat. What a nightmare you went through, and never had any of the problems you did, but we are all differt. Hope you are ok.

Hi,

I've had the Picolax several times and not had any problem. Was it really due to the prep or was it just the straw that broke the camel's back? It sounds as if things could have been pretty bad before you started. If you have go through a prep like this again make sure you tell them that you had a problem as there are alternatives that they can use.

Hope you are feeling better soon.

I was just getting over a flare up , But i was fine the whole week before doing it , was having normal bm's again and not needing painkillers as much. When i did the prep it just made me so ill.
The doctors who treated me said it was a bad reaction to the prep and they won't be giving it to me again.
I'd come on the forum before taking it and seen that others said it was good (much better than the other preps out there) so really wasn't expecting it to be like that.
Don't know why the colonoscopy was so bad. Had a sigmoidoscopy without any sedation and although found it a little painful they managed to get biopsys and have a look around. This was really just unbearable.
On 2 diffrent courses of antibiotics now and still taking Pred. So hopefully things will settle down. And have my next appt on 3rd March so will have to see what the next step is then. It's just mad how much my life has changed in the last year.
Gotta try stay positive :)

As you say, stay positive. If only other people understood how easy those words are to say and how difficult it is to do!

Hi

I'm really sorry to hear about your troubles, hopefully things start to improve for you. I'm sure that like me all you want is a day off!! Just one day!

I had been given Picolax for my prep last Oct and within an hour of taken it I was vomitting and had the worst cramps I ever felt. I was home alone which made things worse. I was throwing up every 10 minutes and it just would not let up. When my partner came home he phoned my GP who came around and gave me a couple of shots which stopped the vomitting and cramps. I couldn't believe I felt that way from a prep. My GI explained that I had taken a reaction from the active ingredient in the prep and the fact that I was in a flare had not helped. He said that it is very unusual but it can happen. I've since taken Kleen Prep which isn't pleasant as there is just so much to drink and it tastes rank. I mixed it with Kia ora and drank through a straw which made it a little easier, there was 4 litres to drink but after 2.5 it was all clear.

I hope that you feel better soon and hopefully another prep will work for you.

Take care
