My 7 year old daughter has been fighting Ulcerative Colitis since she was 3. We have tired sulfasalazine, Canasa suppository, Prednisone, , VSL”#3, Delzicol, Flagyl, Xifaxan, and currently on Methotrexate shots. We are now facing Remicade or surgery. Neither are options that any mother wants to face. I'm looking for anyone out there with other alternatives that may work such as herbs or anything at this point. Please help!!!!

I so feel what you are going through right now. We were going through the same thing...fighting it since she was four and nothing seemed to help. We did everything plus Remicade and Humira. I felt like I was just poking and torturing her. I didn't know what to do, we kept debating about surgery or trying to find some miracle cure. Basically my daughter's colon just quit on her and there was no choice. Surgery was what we HAD to do. I can tell you her life is a million times better now. No more shots. No more meds morning, noon and night. She sleeps all night instead of waking 10 times to go to the bathroom. I just want you to know if you do end up with surgery, it will be okay. It broke my heart to see my daughter right after, but in no time she was up and running around. She feels amazing and it feels like we finally have our life back and she can just be a kid. Send me a message if you need to talk!

Thank you for replying to my post. I'm so up in the air about surgery or remicade. From what I have read it seems to quit working. I want my daughter to have her life back and a good nights sleep. We are curently taking Methotrexrate shots and have been on them for six weeks, I have not seen any improvement. If you dont mind me asking how old is your daughter now, and how old was she when she had surgery. What is a typical bowel movement for her and how many a day. I'm sorry I have so many questions, but I'm scared. I wonder if I should try Remicade first or just opt not to and have surgery?

We ended up using remicade for my son when he was eight.
It was a tough decision but once the meds started to work it was. Truly amazing.
There are risks but the risks of under treated Ibd is too high IMO .
Good luck

What a difficult decision. For what it's worth I will give my opinion. My son has Crohns so I haven't read much on UC, but from what I have read, it is mostly located in one area? If you have tried all those meds and she is still suffering, I would go for surgery. Get rid of the badly affected area, then rely on the meds to keep her stable afterwards. Good luck!

Hi Molliesmom; My 8 yr old son has CD, not UC, but he is on MTX shots. Our GI said it would take 6 wks or more for it to start working. It seemed to be around the 8-10 wk mark when it kicked in, and he had been on prednisone for 5 months as well. Sorry, no experience with Remicade or surgeries yet. Take care, I hope things turn around for you soon!

Have you considered FMT? We are considering it for my 20 yr old daughter with UC, including a bad bout with C-diff. I have been reading a lot of interesting reviews on it in this forum.
