I was just reading in another thread that some IBD sufferers are especially bothered by oranges. I eat half an orange every morning with breakfast, and have eaten either that or half a grapefruit for years. I don't really want to stop eating this category of fruit, because I already find I can't tolerate most fruits, mostly due to gas (apples, stone fruits like nectarines and cherries, etc). So I'm wondering how troublesome citrus is. Does it bother you? Please VOTE!

Observations of which fruits you find you CAN enjoy would also be welcome!

Thanks,

David

Interesting question. Do you mean all citrus or oranges in particular?
I don't eat oranges at all, not even orange juice (upsets my stomach and feel unwell) I find its pretty much the same with all citrus (except lemon, lime and grapefruit)
I eat grapefruit on the odd occasion. I LOVE them but can only manage to eat them if I take them to bits and get rid of most of the membrane etc, ends up being a messy and slow process.

Thanks for your reply, yes I mean citrus in general, but oranges in particular.

Not at all for me. Suspected stomach ulcer in 2004 after eating an orange a day. Although I rather suspect it was small bowel bleeding not stomach, dont have any evidence other than 'feel'.

Hmmm

I don't tend too eat much citrus due too it being a bit messy

but I do drink a large glass of oj every morning

interesting idea - maybe I'll swap the oj out for something else an cut citrus all together from my diet an see if there is any change then re-introduce the oj in a week or two see what happens

I notice my symptoms are usually worse in the morning then clear up a bit by mid afternoon

cheers for the idea

Seems like if nothing else, the acidity could be an issue.

And how come 17 people have read this post so far, yet only ONE has responded to the poll?!?!????:(

I can't vote till I do my test
or it would be invalid. Sorry

Very badly in a flare, but I can handle a little bit in remission. I wouldn't even try to eat a whole orange in remission still. Mandarin oranges don't bother my belly, but I will still see them sometimes in post-processing. (Ha! That was funny!)
OJ might depend on the brand. Sometimes it burns, sometimes it doesn't. I will have to study up. I had some sunny D that went down smoothly, but I don't know how much real orange is in there.

Long before my initial diagnosis, I always suffered with mouth ulcers. I noticed that when I ate citrus or drank citrus juice, I would get them. OJ also upsets my stomach. I will eat an orange every now and again when I am feeling good, but I still avoid OJ and have a very limited citrus intake in general. It's kind of funny, because I don't always make a concious link as to how foods make me feel, but I find myself avoiding foods that affect me. Does anyone else notice this?

I don't seem to have any problem with fruit at all, and enjoy eating oranges, red grapes and apples, and drink OJ every morning, but of course, I don't during a major flare, I stick with the low res diet then

I said no, but the poll was unclear.

I can't eat Oranges unless they are canned. The white fibrous material is very hard to digest.

That being said I am not bothered by Citrus products outside of raw citrus. So fine with Juice, etc.

Yep, definitely. I was also told to avoid grapefruit of all kinds as it interacts with medication. I think it intensifies it...

The possible answers are "Always", "Sometimes" or "Never", seems clear to me :)

Thanks for your reply.

I can eat any kind of citrus without any problems whatsoever. Mind you, I never had problems with dairy, nuts, or veggies either. Stress is my big flare inducer.

Thanks for your reply.

The unclear part is to me was do you mean Orange/Citrus as a whole, just juice, just raw, cooked, bake goods, etc.

Not a real clear cut answer for me. So by answering no I am possibly skewing your results. If it was just raw fruits, then a definite yes.

In recent times came crosswise your Forum and have been understanding along. I thinking I would leave my first remark. I don't know what to say except for that I have enjoyed review. I will continue visit this forum time and again.
