I'm recovering from a resection of my small bowel which was done laparoscopically on 14/11/2012. I have been really surprised at how slow my progress has been so far, feeling very low in energy, having to take pain relief regularly to keep pain controlled and have not passed a bm for 7 days despite taking Movicol daily. I'm seeing my gp tomorrow but wondered if anyone else had felt the same following their surgery........

Hello Tummy Trouble

I am sorry you are not feeling very well .. You went through a big surgery and it takes up to six weeks to start having a little bit of energy .. I felt the same and still feel extremely tired.

There is one concern you not having bowl movement for 7 days ... Are you passing gas .. One of the instructions I got after my surgery is to call The Colorectal Surgeon on call if I don't have any bowl movement for the past 24 hours as it might be an obstruction or an ileus ... Please let me know what happens..
I hope you feel better soon

Hi Tummy Trouble
Feeling like you're making slow progress after surgery is common.
It can take awhile to feel some improvement.
Focus on making small improvements each day - this will help you feel like you're getting better and recognise the little changes on the road to recovery.

If you haven't had a bm for 7 days - you really should speak to your CRS.
As FC indicated - it could be a blockage or a leak.

I hope you feel much better soon.

Hi Tummy trouble. :bigwave:

I don't know whether it is "tomorrow" for you yet and whether you will have already been to the GP. If so, I hope that he/she will have been able to help and reassure you or advise you about seeing your surgeon.

Of course, it will be wonderful if you have had a BM in the meantime.

All good now that my bm has made an appearance! Took over a week and hefty doses of movicol and lactulose but thankfully things seem to be moving in the right direction. I'm now two weeks post surgery, gp believes I have a paralytic ileus which means my bowel didn't like being messed about with and has gone to sleep. Just need to stop the nausea now and get some energy back and I'll feel a whole lot better, thanks for your replies it makes me feel better knowing there are others who have been where I am....

I don't know.

What do all those people out there spend their time thinking about when they don't have to think about their bowel movements? ;)
