Hi All,

I just joined the forums after viewing a bunch of threads and being imprressed by the active and supportive community here. I hope that you will be able to help me. I apologise if this threadisn't in the correct section.

Two days ago i went in to have an abscess drained. It was located a little ways down from my anus and was causing me considerable discomfort. The surgeon did the procedure by just freezing the area and then cutting it open wider to facilitate drainage. Mind you, it started draining by itself as soon as I reached the hospital.

Following the painful procedure, the surgeon packed it and said I can removethe packing after a few days. I was also prescribed antibiotics for a month and Tylenol 3s.

I wonder if anyone can tell me how I should go about healing? All I do is lie in bed all day on my stomach, take hot baths, and feel useless. My wonderful girlfriend is taking care of me, but I feel like such a burden. How long does healing generally take?

I'd appreciate any advice as i've never been through anything like this. I do have Crohn's since 2004 and never had any complications. Started Humira in 2013 and only took Azathioprine prior to that. I had anotheer abscess last year in August which popped because I fell down on it, so I'm wondering if tis is becauseof my Crohn's or something leftover.

Thanks again in advance.

They can take a while to heal and there isn't much you can do to expedite it. Warm sitz baths, keeping the area clean, taking your antibiotics and trying not to put pressure on the area are the best you can do.

NGNG is right. Sitz baths are good to help encourage drainage, and if you have the sitz baths with epsom salts it should promote healing, too.

You're doing the right thing, slow and frustrating as it might feel.
