I've been on Pred a few times before but this time round it is really screwing around with my mood swings and making me really sad and snappy all the time. I'm currently tappered down to 30mg reducing 5mg per five days. I feel worse mentally at 30mg than I did at 50mg. Does anyone know roughly at what dose I should start feeling better mentally. I know that this stuff can knock a person around mentally but the previous times I was on it it did nothing to me mentally, actually previously I felt worse mentally on Entocort but not Pred. ??????

Yeah I had the exacct same thing happen to me. I was insane for the few months I was on it. Just hold on tight and wait for the ride to end.

Good luck

I too was moody with prednisolone and for a while afterwards, thankfully it soon stops when the steroids are stopped, hang in there, not long to go.

i've noticed the side effects are waaaay better when i get down to 15mg. i've been on prednisone for about 4 months, w/ doses ranging from 40mg to 15mg. the longer i've been on it, the more i get used to the side effects. i agree w/the other posters who say just hang in there!

Thanx Guys I g ess I just have to hang in there, no other choice I guess, but it really sucks that the only really effective drug (for me anyway) Pred has so many horrible side effects.......

Hi Guys,

Just an update, unfortuneatly I'm still feeling really bizzare mentally even though I have just dropped down to 15mg of Pred (originally starting at 50mg tappering down 5mg per 5 days). Strange but I know how i'm acting and thinking about curtain things is completly out of character but I just cant do anything about it. Its like I'm possessed when it happens and I have very little or no control over these actons and thoughts. Is this a common extreme side effect with this crappy med ? and if so when will things go back to normal ?????????????:ybatty:

Its difficult to say whether your symptoms are more extreme than anyone elses, but its fair to say that the way you feel about it is perfectly normal. I started on 40mg and seemed to be on that dose forever. My total time the first time I was on steroids was 18months, some people stay on them indefinately. I can remember extreme mood swings and intense anger and I'm afraid I have no advice to try and combat it other than try to be patient and try and focus on the fact that this is only a temporary stage in your life, it won't last forever. The changes in your moods by the way may even last until a couple of months after you stop taking the pred, I know mine did. Having said that though, we are all different and hopefully you will soon see a change for the better. In the meantime, why not try something like meditation or yoga.

trust me i know exactly how you feel. i had extreme moodswings even on 20mg. I had 50mg one of my first times and it didnt mess me up too bad but the last time i took it i was only on 20mg and it messed my head up pretty bad. i had never even heard of what a panic attack was let alone have one until the last course of prednisone i took.

you can try b-vitamins and vitamin C but it probably won't help alot. unfortunately you will have to wait it out until you are done with this evil med. i promise it will get better when you stop taking it. do not stop it cold turkey though.. it can mess you up if you do.

Thanx Ruthymg and Brando and all of the rest of the reply authors, it really helps to hear about everyones personal experiences with this crappy drug. It's kind of reassuring that this isn't a unique experience that is only hppeneing to me, although I wish it never happened to you guy's either. Hope they can come up once and for all with a drug that works for all sufferers of Crohn's without the horrible side effects.

Hi Crampygut
TRy having mood swings, crying periods, hot and cold flahes crampy gut.
This went on for over ten years.I couldnt get past 10mg pred.
untill recentlyI myself tried it on my own because I couldnt handle my hair fallen out any more and the other side effects from pred.Got down to 5mg for 3 weeks, now I am totaly off them.NO more mood swings or hair loss or other side effect but, now I find it hard to eat.Allmy joints and muscles ache so bad. now my lower back is in major pain. This drug caused my body some major damage over the years.Weakened my bones now im left with ostphoris(sp?)and have to take a pill for that now.Its been about 4-5 wks. since ive been totaly off pred.ITs been a rough ride and still is but us CDers have to have faith and be strong this is what life dealt us. So hang in there your side effects should sson pass to everyone and every BODY is different, some just take longer then others.
Good luck
