Hi there, I have just joined to get some advice on a couple of topics...
I was diagnosed with Crohn's via a colonoscopy in 2003. Symptoms have been fairly manageable and although I have trialled some medication in the past, I have not been on anything for ages (7 years). Had a follow up colonoscopy about 2 years ago which showed minimal changes and was advised to continue self-management. My symptoms were always urgency with diarrhoea and I had a couple of skin tags removed from my back passage last year and have had 2 Peri anal abscesses in the past.
My husband and I decided to try for a baby last year and were delighted to fall pregnant straight away. All seemed to go well except we had an unusual blood result from our nuchal test and ended up having a CVS to check for chromosomal abnormalities which was clear. Unfortunately I lost our baby earlier this year at 24 weeks gestation due to multiple placental infarcts and have been on aspirin ever since to prevent further clotting issues.
Nothing was ever mentioned about the Crohn's being a causative factor. I went to see a private gastroenterologist a couple of weeks ago who strongly advised me to have another colonoscopy and commence azathioprine as even if I had minimal symptoms he felt I should be on medication. I advised him that I was trying to get pregnant again and he suggested that we do a faecal calprotectin test to start.
I have just found out that I am pregnant again which is exciting but a little daunting. My Calproctein results just came back at 2500 (Normal is <50) and I have an appointment to see gastro next week who I am sure will want to start me on meds. I am not keen to take meds during pregnancy but obviously do not want to threaten the pregnancy. The obstetrician has also started me on clexane injections to thin the blood.
I have just this week started a grain free diet as I was advised that this was brilliant for Crohn's...
Does anyone have any thoughts on?
1) Crohn's and still birth/miscarriage
2) Grain free diets
3) Azathioprine in pregnancy or other suggestions
4) If aspirin and pregnancy can affect calprotectin results
Thanks brain is a pickle at the moment and obviously want to do all I can to protect this pregnancy. Look forward to hearing from you.
