Since a few years there is a trend in the fastfood industry to hire young, charismatic and beautiful professionnal athletes to represent bad foods. What a TWISTED and DISGUSTING practice is that. In these commercials, the inspiring role models induce the idea in young kids and all of society that to drink and eat crap is associated with good health and success.

McDonalds has tv commercial with NHL Canadians players eating BigMacs here in Québec. One of the players, Gallager, even has a burger he created himself with a new name if I recall. Im not forgetting how intrusive and bombarding McDonald's was during the Olympics this year with images of sports, fun, kids, teens and family... Eugénie Bouchard, a 20 year old rising star in pro-tennis has just signed a 3 year contract with Coca Cola:

''Bouchard's demeanor both on and off the court embodies happiness and active, healthy living; and because of this, she truly is an inspiration to Canadians and a perfect fit for our company,” said Michael Samoszewki, vice-president of Coke’s sparkling business unit.

MONEY MONEY MONEY THATS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN THIS WORLD

MAKES ME WANNA THROW UP!!!

WHEN ARE WE GOING TO HAVE LAWS TO BAN FASTFOOD COMMERCIALS AND STOP THIS SOCIETAL BRAINWASH????

I would probably be more sympathetic with these sponsors if the United States FDA didn't allow so much garbage in even our daily stapled foods. It is really gross, and I wish these places provided actual healthy options for people on the go. Unfortunately, I bet the athletes actually consume that stuff because they need the major carbs and calories to be able to play in big competitions like the Olympics. Anyway, I have to say that I am angrier that sports organizations are supporting companies such Coke and McDonald's considering their lack of morality and compassion for people in a few countries, but that is a completely different issue.

A Big Mac would tempt me but since the recycled nuclear waste burger they serve up looks nothing like the the adverts I,ll pass.

Lady Organic I agree with you but as long as people buy the food, those restaurants will still be there. It comes down to more than just marketing - though it plays a large role - but the fact of the matter is that it is cheaper to eat horribly than it is to eat healthfully, at least it is that way here. I also believe people have to take responsibility for their actions in buying the food. But also, what about the athletes? They should get blame too. They are spokemen and women but they choose which sponsorships they want to take on and work with and most of them do it only to boost their own fame. Just some thoughts that come to my mind. But like I said, I am very much in agreement with you.

I believe that the power of media can be stronger than parental or schooling influence when we grow up, on subjects such as food habits and overconsumption in general. Media is extremly powerful in making us dream and can completely manipulate, brainwash us. As young kids we grow up and develop with these powerful images and ideas that fast food is fun and normal to eat. We literally adopt and engage in these ideas. Its extremly hard to change and go on as a teen or an adult with good nutrition afterwards. I can sayI was brainwashed and was totally unconscious that these foods were in fact unhealthy even with a digestive disease for several years! I thought it was just normal to eat these things and that nothing so wrong could come out of them. it is truly a cultural norm to eat these things (although its slowly changing now). When you are sold and hooked as a kid, it is most likely you will remain a faithful long-term consumer.Thats the goal of these giants. They target children and teens and vulnerable population with low prices.

slowly we will be getting regulations to add taxes to these sweetened beverages and fast foods and hopefully, publicity will be banned as well. extra taxes and regulations on commercials and packagings in the tobacco industry has greatly helped people wanting to stop smoking. It is true, we are the ones responsible in buying, but I firmly believe we are victims of the power of media and in great need for gvmt intervention in this regard.

I have been hearing about how sales at places like McDonald's and Burger King are going down, and relatively "healthy" places like Panera are going up. It will take a long time, but I think people are becoming more aware of what's being put into their bodies. Of course there are a lot more factors than media (i.e. accessibility to healthy foods, funding, etc), but the public is starting to wake up.
