My son has proctitis and I am confused on how he got that and now saying it could be early stage crohns as he has other symptoms. I can't find anything on the web that says you can just have proctitis by itself so I am concerned. Does proctitis mean a link to ibd? He is only 11 and now has had some mucus and blood in stool when wiping. Confusing times....

Thanks kathie

Just wanted to give you a (((hug))). I am sorry you are having to deal with anything at all. I am not familiar with proctitis, but very familiar with Crohn's. I am sure someone more knowledgeable will come along very soon.

Not much experience with proctitis here either but I believe it can be caused by an infections as well. Are they doing other testing? Have they tested for C-diff? Just a thought but as it's an infection in the colon.
If it does turn out to be Crohn's you will find lots of information and support from this wonderful group of people.
Hope you get answers soon that can be awful not knowing.

My son had a strep infection before dx, and later a rectal abscess that led to his dx of Crohn's. Would be worth ruling out strep with a simple swab test (yes, rectally, just like with the throat). With the other symptoms, I would have the pediatrician do a blood test to check SED rate (inflammation) and maybe a calprotectin stool sample to check for inflammation and refer you to a GI if those seem to indicate IBD. Good luck!

DS has proctitis among other areas of crohn's
Rectal inflammation will not show up in sed rates or crp.
You can have proctitis with or without IBD.
My son is currently on Canasa suppositories as well as Asacol and Humira.
His proctitis shows up as rectal prolapse as well as blood and pain.
Remicade had it under control . We are still working on humira.
Second the fecal cal, and blood work
When was his last scope or imaging done?

Thanks all for your thoughts and suggestions. He had colonoscopy and endoscopy in early feb and had three weeks on prednisone suppositories but never felt 100% better and still had constipation and diarrhea. He also has had bowel imaging and those scans but a simple X-ray showed inflammation of the colon. But scopes didn't find that. Dr has suggested the FODMAP diet and have been on it for 5 weeks with no change. He has dairy allergy and he had a milk challenge and this is what I think made him so sick as he never felt we'll again after that. Dr saw the proctitis and told he expected crohns to show up but it didn't in the scopes. His stool has recently been tested and has nothing in it. Not sure if I can get that cal protein stool test in Australia ? Anyone know coz I can ask dr next week.

Calprotectin is available in Australia. There is no Medicare rebate. Get quotes from the labs as prices vary. We used Dorevitch last time and it cost us $40.

Hi Catherine, did you ask the dr for it? I am in Sydney and that place is in Melbourne. I can't seem to find any places in Sydney. I have googled it and nothing seems to come up.
Ta,
Kathie

My daughter has had it order by her gi. I have asked my gp for it who had never heard of the test and looked it on line amd ordered it for me.

The blood testing lab told me it was a private test with no rebate, so I rang the melbourne labs for prices. It costs $80 at the other lab.
