So I couldn't find that many posts about prograf, and was wondering if anyone here has any thoughts about it. Ive been taking it for about a year and a half but am starting to wonder about it a little more. thanks for any help

hmm ive never even heard of prograf before. does it have multiple names? what type of drug is it?

I never heard of it either, but I just googled it and from what I found it is used to prevent your body from rejecting an organ transplant... umm I will just copy and paste what I found on the website and give you a link to it ..

Prograf® (tacrolimus) is indicated for the prophylaxis of organ rejection in patients receiving allogeneic liver, kidney, or heart transplants. It is recommended that Prograf be used concomitantly with adrenal corticosteroids. Because of the risk of anaphylaxis, Prograf injection should be reserved for patients unable to take Prograf capsules orally. In heart transplant recipients, it is recommended that Prograf be used in conjunction with azathioprine or mycophenolate mofetil. The safety and efficacy of the use of Prograf with sirolimus has not been established.

I hope that helps you out some, I have been looking at this thread now wondering myself what it was and since no one else here had been on it, I had to find out :)

also, it does say that it is an immunosuppressive so I suppose it might help with Crohns... hopefully Colt gets to this thread soon, he seems to be the offical "forum Dr"

yea it is used for transplants and yea im taking it because its an immunosupressant. I was also wondering why i couldnt find anyone else who was using it. i was on pentasa and asacol for a bit but have been on prograf for a year and a half and am doing mostly ok.

yep we need colt to come in here!
i have no idea about it! sorry
glad that you seem to be doin ok on it though

I have been taking Prograf(Fk506 or they even call it Tacrolimus) for about six months. I was not getting much relief with my mouth sores taking when I was taking it alone. My doctor just added the Cimzia along with the Profraf and I am feeling almost as good as I was after my surgery and before the Chrohns started to flare again in my mouth. Did that make sense?? I am off the pred. and my mouth and esophagus are completely under control! I am soooo excited. I was very scared about taking both immunosuppresants at the same time but I really can't believe how well I am doing. Cimzia alone did not work and neither did Prograf by it's self. I recommend trying it for those of you who have tried everything. When I first started taking the Prograf I did do a search on the site for information. I did not find much so I just posted "Has anyone tried FK506" I got some great info from Jan who is a nurse that has used it with the type of work she does. You might check that out because she had a ton of input.
Best of luck :)

When I originally researched these immunosuppresant drugs I remember reading that most of them were originally used to treat organ transplant patients for rejection purposes...I think there are a few newer ones on the horizon and this is just another one to try ...

ha how ironic is this? i posted months ago that i didnt know what prograf was and now im on it too lol.

wow, it sounds like its working so well for you la la!! that so exciting! :D

i started on it a few months ago for the pyoderma on my legs and stomal area. the ones on my legs totally dried up but the peristomal wound seems like it doesnt respond to the prograf.
mixed reviews from me here!

haha crohniecaroyln, youre right prograf is the main one they use for transplants, so much so thatr my pharm, acy mailed me a book called "your new organ"

i was like uhhhh why? and then realized it was the prograf lol
