Hi. I have suffered with crohns for the past 15 years. I have had surgery on a fistula and been on/off steroids for most of the time. However, no matter what ive done, i have never been able to put on weight. It seems to stay round the 10 stone mark which is underweight for my height and age. I was wondering if anyone had any useful hints as too how i can put on a bit more weight. Thanks:D

Hey, I am just like you, I have been really underweight my whole life due to it. This summer I just started to make it a goal to gain a lot of weight and workout. I started at the begining of the summer at 140lbs (10 Stone). I am currently 155lbs (11 Stone) within 2 months. I have been gaining by just eatting a massive amount on top of weight lifting / working out.

I eat about 3400 calories a day with a lot of protein. I drink whey protein between meals and after a workout to gain mass. The weight will be put on but it's slow. Like 1lb a week

Thanks for this. Does whey protein actually work as i just thought it was a product used to con weight lifters into parting with their money? How many of these drinks do you have per day then, 2? Appreciate the advice :)

No its works. If you eat things that have little protein and you need more into your diet they're great. I drink about 2 a day yeah. One in the morning and one after I workout

Protein in general is needed, it builds up every tissue. Protein together with fat and carbs are the three macronutrients, you need all 3 in some amount or you would die simply said. There's lots of stuff about protein that isn't true, like that you can only intake X amount of protein a day, that you need to take it right after a workout, etc, but it is still essential. You don't need to use whey if you don't want to, but protein is needed, just for functioning.

Do you get a lot of sun exposure? Do you have a dog that you walk regularly?

I envy your problem, but I know that's not the right way to look at it. That said, most women WISH they couldn't gain weight.

A guy friend of mine who recently moved to the beach AND got a new dog has lost so much weight he can't keep his pants on --- literally!

Apparently the sun increases testosterone in men, and combined with the exercise he's lost so much weight he had to buy a whole new wardrobe. There was a particular incident that set it all off, but it's funnier the way he tells the story.

Anyway, my point is that if you're out in the sun a lot that may have something to do with it.
