I was first diagnosed with ulcerative proctitis around 2010
( I believe half a twinrix shot started it ) this is a whole other topic.
Anyway the ulcerative proctitis turned into ulcerative colitis
and is gradually getting worse over time I am currently taking salofalk enemas and mezavant daily. As long as I don't miss a dose the U.C is manageable. my GI doctor has tried to get me to take humira and harsh drugs like this. I would not take it because of the health risks (cancer) I have tried a number of different natural ways to heal my self Raw goat milk, VSL , vitamin B shots, juicing, Keto diet, raw kefir, aloe vera juice and acupuncture all of may have helped a little. I have always preferred the Natural way of healing and am not sure if I should try this cortiment mmx. Has this worked for anyone and put them in remission? are there risks involved in this ? have you tried a natural remedy that worked for you?

A good number of people take Entocort for crohn's, and the cortimemt mmx is the same medication just released in the colon raster than the ileum. Most have had good success with it. It is usually meant to be used (for crohn's, at least) in the short term, but some GIs prescribe it for longer periods. As a short term medication (3 months then a taper) it can be quite effective without the major systemic side effects of something like a steroid. It is still a steroid and if used long term it can cause adrenal suppression or, in some people, steroid induced Cushings. I'm tagging Scipio who uses Entocort for flares and Maya142 whose daughter took it for so long it caused Cushings. You will be able to get two different stories; it's probably worth asking your GI about.

My daughter did get Cushing's with Entocort - but she was also on Prednisone for some part of the time. I think it was both steroids that caused the Cushing's. She was on Entocort for over a year because we could not get her Crohn's under control on Imuran. We increased the dose, added Allopurinol but it didn't work. While on Entocort, for about 3-4 months, she was also on Prednisone - usually 15 mg or lower.

Finally we put her on a biologic (Cimzia) and she was able to taper off first Prednisone and then Entocort. But she did develop Cushing's and some nasty side effects - a puffy round and flushed face, rapid weight gain, purple stretch marks all over her thighs and belly.

Honestly, we have had MANY more side effects and issues with steroids vs. biologics. Both my daughters have been on biologics for years and have never had side effects. They have been completely life changing. We were terrified putting our kids on them, but I can honestly say that we have never regretted our decision to try them for a second. We started with Humira for both girls.

At some point, the disease became much scarier than the meds. The meds have potential side effects -- which MIGHT happen. The disease, on the other hand, is very LIKELY to cause complications if inflammation in not controlled - things like strictures, abscesses and fistulae, which lead to surgery. Some people are lucky and the disease is mild, but most people need a maintenance medication to prevent complications from occurring.

As Jabee says, I have used Entocort to control flares. Fortunately my disease is fairly mild, so knocking it back with one short course of Entocort usually keeps it in remission for a long time. With a two month course of Entocort I did not get any side effects.

Budesonide has the advantage that it is topical rather than systemic, meaning that it exerts its effect on the lining of the gut as it passes through the gut rather than by being absorbed by the blood stream. Only a small portion of the drug is absorbed into the blood, thus the risk of Cushing's or other side effects is much reduced.

I wanted to add - our GI says she has never seen Cushing's with Entocort alone. It was likely the combination of steroids and that my daughter has been on them a LOT for the last 5 years (for months at a time).

That said, there are other maintenance meds that aren't steroids that could be used. If it was my kid, I would not want ANY steroid as a long-term medication, especially now that we are dealing with adrenal insufficiency, which can be very dangerous.

There are other maintenance meds - for UC 5-ASAs, for Crohn's and UC - MTX/6MP/Imuran or biologics.

thanks so much for the reply and responses im going to try the medication(cortiment mmx) tomorrow. I'll keep you posted and let you guys know if it works for me
