I recently had a small bowel obstruction and a GI doctor did a colonoscopy to dilate my strictures. Before the colonoscopy, he ordered a CT scan for my abdominal area. Since through colonoscopy, he should be able to see the condition of my small bowel including the extent of narrowing of the strictures and if there is any inflammation or ulceration. Why is a CT scan required, is it to check the condition of the outside wall of the small bowel or formation of any abscess ?

Hi there and welcome,
I had a colonoscopy followed by a C.T. scan when my Calprotectin tests showed high figures. The Scan gives a more detailed picture of all the bowel area. The colonoscopy only goes so far. I hope this helps and all goes well for you. Let me know how you are. Best wishes.

With a colonoscopy they can usually only go into the terminal ileum and so you need a CT or MRI scan to give information about the rest of the small bowel.

A CT or MRI will also give information about the extent of inflammation through the bowel wall or any extraintestinal complications like abscesses or fistulas.
