I'm looking at having a resection done probably in the fall. I am on Humira now, but my labs keep coming back with high levels of inflamation. My doctor will do a colonoscopy in a month (after I try another antibiotic and get off of entocort) but he said he would really like for me to have a resection because my ileum responds to nothing. I have good days and bad days, but the constant is the ileum which always bothered me and never healed no matter what we did.

So here's my question. Do those of you who had complications with your resections feel that if you had a better surgeon, that the complications would never have happened? How did you decide on a surgeon for your surgeries? Did you see a Crohn's specialist? Did your GI do it?

Thanks so much in advance!!!

Hi,

I had a lot of complications following my Stoma reversal back in February, I had internal bleeding, a four unit blood transfusion, a huge blood clot in my abdomen and fluid in my pelvis and then a leak at my anastomosis which resulted in a fistula coming out my surgical wound.
Personally, I don't feel that the problems I had were due to any failings on the part of my surgeon, he's brilliant and I would trust him with any further surgery that I may have to have. My resection and Stoma surgery last November went without a hitch, which he also did. I just had a lot of bad luck and really complicated Crohn's.
My surgeon was the best at the hospital I go to, he specialises in colorectal surgery with a special interest in IBD and colorectal cancer. I also have a gastroenterologist and IBD nurse who work with my surgeon.

I hope whatever you decide that it goes well, I'm sure it will. The majority of people have perfect surgery, my friend just had her first resection and was only in hospital for 4 days and has tiny laprascopic scars! I'm seriously jealous as I have one 9 inch scar and one 4 inch scar!!
But yeah, good luck with it all x

Thank you! I don't go in for a surgical consult for a while. I was just curious since complications almost look like the norm. But it looks to me like crohns always has looked to me... unpredictable...
