question

I was diagnosed with Crohns about 15 years ago. I am a hiker, ride a bicycle, kyack etc. At that time I became so ill, I could barely walk let alone go up a hill. I was advised by my GP to go to a gastroenterologist & was diagnosed with Crohns. First thing was a colonoscopy which told us what the problem was & then medication. I tried a few which did not work & then Asacol was proscribed. Magic, over night almost I was in remission. Every year a colonoscopy was done & was told very necessary. Last five showed a normal colon. Is it still necessary to have one yearly. Does anyone know.

Hi and welcome! That is such terrific news you are doing so well. I can understand why you don't want an annual colonoscopy; they are just no fun! But it is important to be proactive and check for active disease. It's better to be safe than sorry!

Hiya albert
and welcome

It does depend on your gastro. When I asked mine he said it wasn't necessary every year, maybe every 2-3 years. But, having said that, he would perform one if I was having frequent flares, which I'm not at the mo.
Glad you're doing well!
lotsa luv

They are not nice but I am not afraid any more cause I get good drugs lol. I was told once a year is crucial to catching early signs. Repeated flares cause scaring which in turn can cause pain... nice cycle eh?

I used to have them every couple of years - but then as the time progressed, I get them yearly now due to the increased chance of cancer from having the disease for so long.....I would prefer that than letting something get away for 2 yeras!
