Hi there, just wondering if anyone is takign this as treatment for crohns. I was taking pentasa granuales for 6 weeks, 3 daily but they were cutting the stomach out of me and developed gastritis as a result. So started questran last week - supposed to be 4 sachets daily but am only taking one at the minute as taking protium 40g twice daily for my stomach to heal up. Thanks

I take it. Just a hint, don't mix with Mt. Dew :puke_r:
If you can stand it, I found it best mixed with orange juice.

:eek2: 4 sachets a day?? Whoa. I had 2 resections and major D after them but I only had one sachet a day. My sister who has UC-CD took at the most 3 a day. I am sure that is what your Gi recommended but if you feel bloated and constipated, cut back one or two. I started at one and it was all I needed. My mother is taking it now (for Cholesterol) and she finds one is enough, bloat and gassy.

Everyone is different with their meds, so see how you feel.

Thanks for that Farm. I mix it with water and despite being thru a few rounds of colonoscopies and taking preps - this is v v hard to take. Its the grit, its horrible but I would drink anything to have relief. The only other thing is after taking it I find it v heavy on my tummy

Jettalady, it was 4 that my gp prescribed, I only took one myself first day to see how I got on as meds and me dont really agree. You can only take it an hour after other meds and you have to have it 6 hours then before taking meds so with taking other meds there is no way that you could do 4 a day - hope I make sence here. I think that the gp made a mistake to be honest. I am under pressure trying to get the one glass down as its v hard to take.

I know what you mean, my sister had a helluva time with meds and taking Questran, probably why she only did 3 a day. I was on same type of drugs but different compostions (we both had surgery at the same time and never knew the other was too, we are not close but it was the only thing we had in common). I took 1 packette in the morning only and the rest of the day was meds, meds, meds....

I take 3 a day. I normally mix with hot water or orange juice. It's given me alot of relief.

It's like drinking plaster in my opinion....Blah. I mix it with cranberry or grape juice.

I take it and tried mixing it with everything and it was all gross so I just use water and down the hatch...been taking it for years before I eat anything more than a cracker...If I miss a dose boy do I get the diarrhea big time...

Does it actully stop the diarrhea for you guys? Cause it ain't working for me!

It works for me...but it feels like a brick sitting in my stomach. I only use it for special occasions....I mix it with my champaign...Just kidding about the champaign part. But I only use it when I know i am going somewhere in the morning where bathroom access is limited.

:eek2: I am surprised, if I took more than a pack a day I felt almost constipated, and that scared me more. I had used it after my surgery but that was years ago, now I don't D that much, unless I eat what I should't.

Maybe because I'm full of......wisdom?
I don't know but it's frustrating.

Well I am on it now since Saturday and dont have any runs thank God and seem to be going for a normal poo - yay so excited!! Farm, the doc prescribed 4 for me so you should up it - you can take up to 6 daily she said. I have to agree with imisspopcorn about feeling like a brick cause thats exactly what its like. Best of luck - hope it works out for you

Ok I'm up to 3 a day and still nada! I'm mean really, c'mon already :/

Everything else is whacked so why not :ycool:

Well it finally kicked in. I've been bowed up all morning like a jack rabbit with a hiney full of thorns. I'm backed up like Elvis's plumbing! :O

LMAO.....It's either the devil you know (diarrhea), or the devil you don't know(constipation).....Which do you prefer....???

That's the million $ question!

Its finally kicking in so Farm - love your description of it LOL. Well I am on it now 2 weeks this Saturday and am doing well. I get pains and feel like I have to go now and nada happening. Do find myself a lot crampy and feel horrid sick for over an hour after drinking the stuff. I am taking it now mid morn in water and oh God I dread it. Dont know what way I will take it when I go back to work. Have it taken now 45mins and its like a block lodged or wallpaper paste as I refer to it - yuck. I choose the big c anyway for the mo cause if I get my diet right I might help that prob. The joys ha!!

I know Minky....It's the worst stuff ever. Someone said a drug name Welchol(sp?) Is in tablet form and does the same thing. I am asking about it tomorrow at my appointment...

Good luck Minky. I found that 3 a day is too much but 2 a day is too little so I'm trying to split a pack. It's horrid to take it, but I've had worse meds in my life. Orange juice is the best for me, but hurt my GERD if I drink too much orange juice.

IMP, please let us know about the tablet, if you get it and if it works.

Farm hope it works out soon for ya. Imisspopcorn - please let me know as well about that tablet, that would be fantastic. I cant stick that drink to be honest anymore. Heres hoping we will get our meds right soon

I just got back from the doctor...He gave me the Welchol prescription, with no problems...It is pretty much the same as Questran (bile acid sequestrant used to reduce high cholesterol) My co-pay was $55. (That's a high tier med in my plan, vs. Questran which is $7)...The only real precaution I saw was for diabetics and people who are on other meds that require constant blood levels(seizure, thyroid) because this med can bind your other meds. I am going to take it tonight with dinner and let you all know if it does the trick.

Well after 2 weeks on the pentasa I think I'm going to have to move to something different or alter it - OMG the constipation that I have is unreal and I am in pain the last few days, I reckon I will nearly have to take laxatives tonight or something if things dont improve - am gone from one extreme to teh other!! How did the tablet go IMP?

Minky, It is probably the Questran that is binding you up....It's like a cement plug...
The tablets did the trick. I still was a little loose, but not that horrible urgency. Only day three, but I will keep you updated.

I take Colestipol - tablet form - my Doctor is such a nice guy

I do find I need to increase the dose after certain foods like beef

I hate the powder too

IMP your right I meant the questran. Im going to ask about that tablet now next week - I dont miss the powder at all I tell you - oh God it used make me almost gag - horrid..Glad to hear you are doing well IMP

I take 1 pack a day first thing in the morning with room temp. water and constantly stir. I don't mind it, I 've been doing it for years now, it is second nature to me. I just hate the idea of having to take it...however the alternative is not an option. I can't imagine you guys that need to take 3 or 4, I would go crazy too. I am curious about the tablet form, that would be so much simpler, especially if I am out of town.

The Welchol is working good for me so far...It is so much easier to take. I have issues with drinking stuff.

May want to try Colestid. It has a generic available and should be cheaper. When is the best time to take it??

Hi umpharmd....I can only say that I prefer to take my med at night because it decreases the morning Diarrhea......I think you can take it anytime as long as it is not taken with your regular meds....Do you have Crohn's?

Yep. Diagnosed 7/08 and had no problems AT ALL until October of this year. I have had 5 hospitilizations since then. I was also on complete bowel rest (yeah!-PICC line and TPN) for 8 weeks, prior to surgery on 8 Jan. I had about a foot of my terminal ileum removed, an abscess drained, and 2 fistulas fixed. The big D is new to me. My only symptom when I was diagnosed and at during this flare was severe pain. Thankfully I am currently off all narcotics. BTW-withdrawl from the Duragesic Patch is truly HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!
