Questran. What's the verdict? Have just been put on it in addition to imuran. Don't really want to be on another drug but just wondering what the opinions are on it in this forum. Sometimes the patients know more than the doctors!!
It is a very useful drug for the control of bile salt malabsorption diarrhoea. I assume you have had a right hemicolectomy/ileocecotomy?
My daughter was on it post op and it certainly worked but she didn’t like the texture of it, she was 14 at the time, so refused to take it. The alternative of planning her eating around her day was not a great solution either.
Anyway 4 years down the track she happened upon psyllium husks, you get them in the supermarket in the health food/organic/gluten free section. They have the same action as Questran, they bind to bile salts so they don’t flow freely into the large bowel and so cause diarrhoea. They worked wonders for her and now my son uses them too.
So all up, in my opinion Questran is a drug worth taking. If you do commence it, or psyllium, you mustn’t take your other medication within an hour before or two hours after the Questran/Psyllium. It is actually a tad longer than those times for Questran.
Thanks for that Dusty. I have tried the husks but didn't really know if they were doing anything. They're much cheaper than the questran so maybe I'll give them a go again.
