Quit MJ, diagnosed with Crohn's - Coincidence??

Hey guys

I used to smoke a lot. I never drank because I was on call for work, so I figured I could smoke, and then if I was needed, I was ready to go. If I had been drinking, I couldn't exactly drive somewhere. (Not saying I always drove when using either, don't get the wrong idea here!)

All i'm wondering now, is when I was smoking all the time, I always had formed stool, very regular b/m's, no symptoms whatsoever. I quit about 3 years ago (weened down dramatically, i'll still smoke occasionally, once a month or so) and ever since I quit, I started getting some diarrhea, I was more gassy, and it seemed to me that a lot of things that I ate would give me kind of gut rot....

Diagnosed with Crohn's last week....coincidence? Maybe I had Crohn's all along and the MJ was keeping it at bay?

Just wondering what your thoughts are on this, i'm expecting a variety of ideas, as I'm sure everyone is different, and i'm not looking for proof, or explanation, just thoughts. Makes me wonder, ya know?

Cheers:wine:

thank you for sharing this. I am convinced that a cannabidiol deficiency is what is causing the Crohn's to begin with because my own results have been so good

got an email from administrator to censor...just sucks that you keep you live with the embarrassment and pain of the disease all your life, the stigma of the treatment you choose and you get told your posts come across as spam and pushy from an organization that claims to help people with crohn's when for the first time in your life you open up about it.

My guess is the act you are a brand new member, branded your account and started advertising for another site is what caused the problem.

If you wish to share all the information without linking back to a site, then that would be no problem I presume.

thank you, i am not sure I want to be a member after the email I got. But is there a site that has all these rules ...so I don't run across any more of the rude emails from the censors with this forum.

Sorry if you felt attacked. The moderator didn't want to make you feel like you can't discuss these topics here, the site has a strict no-spam rule and a new member linking back to his site may have been construed as such.

You're welcome to discuss cannabidiol all you want in here :)

That's very interesting because when I was in high school I used mj quite often and never had an issue until I quit, then suddenly IB and Crohns was in my life. I live in TN and so far no mm here so there is no way I can medicate with it. I did have the opportunity to try it in Colorado after a back injury. I decided to forego my pain meds to see if the mm would work as well as to compare. I will say that I had no stomach trouble, no back trouble, and did not have to use my "leg medicine" (I have restless leg syndrome as well) while I was there. The only meds I had to take was for my thyroid. I wish TN would get on board her with mm.

I've had Pancolitis for about 13 years now. The first 8 years I was on every drug you could imagine and nothing worked. The summer after I graduated high school I started smoking cannabis with my friends on an almost nightly basis. My symptoms completely disappeared that summer...

I finally made the connection that the cannabis was helping me after I quit using my traditional meds and remained in remission.

This stuff works and there are very few side effects especially if you use a vaporizer (like I do :))

I honestly believe that I wouldn't have a colon right now if it weren't for medical cannabis

I have had a very similar experience!!! Please read my thread on marijuana use and negative Crohn's test result which I just posted today:)

I agree with all of you Francis, Kevin I have to agree I think mj ingested works better than any pharmaceutical and I think that Kevin you are right I think Crohns along with a variety of other diseases is the product of a CBD deficient body which genetically and historically makes sense. This is because Crohns along with other diseases was recently discovered to have come from Northern European Neanderthal genes. If this is true then when those genes came into existence it would have been around the time of the last ice age. If that is true it makes sense because as we know if its cold a tropical plant like cannabis is not growing meaning that if cannabis was a dietary staple and suddenly because of the big chill it was no longer available then all types of problems would arise. Think of a vitamin deficiency same concept.

The first big flares I had were when I quit smoking. I quit again several years ago. Guess what... Yep symptoms are back and nothing seems to do anything. I just got my cert. and am looking for a caregiver. I really hope it works. I can't wait to get off Remicade!

Hmm really interesting...I started smoking because I have no appetite, my stomach hurt when i ate and i got nauseous a lot. For a long time it helped with everything...Four months ago i started getting worse though...and I am still smoking ...and it helps with those things but my bms arent normal and i deal with a lot of pain and fatigue...

Same story with me. Was a stoner in highschool, had short but violent outburts throughout the 4 years. Stopped smoking marijuana recreationally shortly after highschool, and I got diagnosed with severe Crohn's when I got a severe flare up that wouldn't go away.

Medical herbs have been a huge help in getting things back to normal.

I havent touched it since my one and only flare-up...and I have had no problems at all. (knock on wood) I started entocort as of yesterday though, as my GI said he wants to bring down the inflammation over the 15cm of infected area.

Even if I did do it again, I think I would get too paranoid..."Did I pay those bills? I hope my mom dont call!" haha

I've had the same experiences as everyone here. However have you guys thought about the alternate? While continuously smoking marijuana, recreationally or whatever, your body was continuously getting supplied with it's anti inflammatory properties - however, when stopped all of a sudden, your body began to lack what it was continuously used to which resulted in a significant inflammatory response which later translated into a Crohns diagnosis for many of us here.

Based on my experiences I couldn't help but think if the initial marijuana use (starting then stopping) triggered the inflammatory response. This thread is revolving around a similar idea so I wanted to see what the rest of you thought?

I'm in no way against marijuana, I in fact just began a high CBD oil regimen.

I thought that was a possibility for awhile but from what I have read the amount of Cannabinoids one would have to ingest to cause a cell mutation in which the body itself stopped producing its own Cannabinoids would be immense. It is definitely possible but I think that it manifesting as Crohns would be based solely on genetics rather than a random manifestation.

Marty, yours is a perfectly logical theory to be honest. It's not how the human body works, though, so it's not impossible but highly unlikely.

Because the body produces its own source of cannabinoids, our own endogenous production could be slowed or even stopped altogether after chronic use of cannabis. This might explain the low sperm count of some men who take it regularly, because sperm production is dependent in part on the endocannabinoid system from what I understand.

If the introduction of anti-inflammatories and its subsequent removal could cause a "shock" that induces certain diseases, the prevalence of IBD would be much higher than what it currently is.

That being said, it could be found out in 10 years that you were right. In the mean time, there's very little to worry about on that front in my (somewhat informed) opinion. ;)

I believe that this could be very true. I will tell you why because of my experience with the same thing. I started using mm when I was 16 years old until about 26 or 27 years old. When I stopped Using mm I was then diagnosed with Crohn's disease about two years after stoping mm. But I can remember before I was diagnosed I had my first real flareup that lasted for a few weeks about 8 to 10 months after stopping mm. I can always remember since I was a kid having digestive problems but when I first started using mm I never really paid attention to it helping me with nausea or diarrhea. As I got older into my early and mid-20s I started to notice that it would help me with having a healthy stool. As far as nausea I think the strains with high THC are better. I have been researching this a lot lately and it seems to be the strains with high CBD help with maintaining the disease. Growers for years have been breading up the THC into the genetics and that lowers the CBD. It seems that both THC and CBD help with the disease. Also it's good for mm to have a healthy balance of THC and CBD ratios because they can help counter react earth other.

I was diagnosed before I tried MJ, but when I was actively smoking it every day in smaller amounts, I never had symptoms, even though that was a very stressful time in my life. Then, I stop, and what do you know! I find myself in a flare a year later.

I want to make marijuana my main medicine. Right now I have no job and no money, and where I am MM is illegal, but I am willing to move out of state, and away from my family, if I have to.
