Raw Bananas cause the worst reaction with my Crohn's Disease that I've had so far. Even when compared to beans, veggies, nuts, and other raw fruits, the banana will send me into crippling pain. However, if the banana is cooked, I barely get a reaction, if any at all. So I was wondering if anyone else with Crohn's has such a severe reaction to raw bananas. I could not find a reason why they would cause more pain than other things and only when raw. A friend suggested it may be a chemical only found in tropical fruits (mango, papaya, banana, etc), which could be true as Ive never tried other tropical fruits. However, I also thought it may be an allergic reaction and not Crohn's related. Thanks for any input you may be able to provide ^_^.

I never have had a severe reaction, but if I eat one I feel like I am going to puke for a while. I never have figured out why. I thought maybe the iron in it was a problem, but other food with iron does not give me the reaction.

I think Dingbats link may explain it for me, as I am somewhat allergic to latex. Good job on the research.

can't say i've ever honestly had digestive problems with bananas. They've always been soft and easy for me, one of the few comfort foods in times of flares.

That seems very interesting and maybe Ill ask about that next time I go to the doctor. I don't have a reaction to strawberries, processed latex (gloves, condoms, etc), or kiwi, so maybe there is a specific type in bananas (and my friend suggested the mangos and avacados so maybe in those as well). Would explain a lot, and it does sound like that is the answer since cooking said fruits causes the latex proteins to become inactive.

i get slight tummy aches when i eat bannas. but when i eat bannanas and chocolate together (like one after the other) i have a severe tummy ache and feel unwell for ages. ive never had a severe problem with bannanas on their own though.

Hmmm, the only proviso I was given with eating banana's was that they HAD to be overly ripe... Silly me just accepted that, never bothered to inquire as to why.

So, I don't know why my nutrition counselor and all of the dieticians insisted that I limit my consumption of bananas to those that only fruit flies would find appealing, but having followed their advice, I've never had a problem with them

Raw banana's are also the absolute worst for me as well. I find that overripe ones with brown spots or when used for baking are just fine. I fear the yellow or semi green banana's

banana's are probably the fruit i find easiest to digest. i try to eat as many as i can as its one of the few fruits my body can tolerate.

I know cooked bananas don't affect me, I've never really tried browning bananas (I don't like fruit to be mushy, I like them unripe, though with bananas its "just ripe" since raw green bananas will hurt anyone lol). I'm starting to wonder if maybe its common for people with crohn's to develop a food allergy to this latex-like protein. The only thing is, I only have the internal reaction, so maybe instead its like lactose intolerance, not an allergy, but eating/drinking it will hurt, alot.

Bananas are fine with me. I have no problem digesting them.

Why do the Dietitians say to stick with the BRAT diet then. Just curious.

I probably live on bananas. They are one of the few foods in times of flare (in addition to chicken soup and steamed rice) that I can tolerate. But preferably they should be ripe not green....

I know a raw banana just about killed me once. Was right when I was starting the SCD diet. And according to the SCD book, take with a grain of salt, unripe bananas have lots of starch in them. Once they ripen its all simple sugar.

OK, I have to ask.. (even tho the answer may already be right in front of me here)

What's a 'BRAT' diet?

That would be bananas, rice, apples and toast. My dietitian told me to use this diet with the bad case of th "D"

I eat bananas all the time. For people with a healthy gut, it's supposed to help both Constipation and the big D. Basically, a regulator.

I eat a banana every morning. from what i understand they are good at constipating you. They never have bothered me though.

I have a TERRIBLE Time digesting Banana's as well...I used to eat a Peanut Butter/Banana Sandwich Every morning before diagnosis...
I try about 1/2 a banana once a month now just to hope...but every time I end up in PAIN> SEVERE \PAIN:(
I have baked them coated in Honey and Honey Bunches of Oats cereal before...they are great that way and don't seem to hurt me as badly

Yeah, but are you eating just regular banana's, or are you waiting till they are so ripe, the dog won't even eat them? That's the only way my gut will tolerate them.
It's not appetizing in any way, dark brown on the outside, pure mush on inside...

can everyone say 'Yuck!!'... I knew you could...

I got very ill from bananas about 10 years ago and swore them off until about 2 days ago. So far I seem to be tolerating them. I do notice some immediate bloating but no pain with them and they are passing fine otherwise. It seems right now all foods are causing insta-bloat for me though.

I am afraid of bananas, two days of very painful cramping last time I ate one. Not sure if it was that or the apple I ate though.

Even if they caused me a little cramping i think i would force myself to eat them still, too much of a valuable source of Potassium since pred brutalizes my K levels. Bananas have been the Potassium saviour, lol

Well maybe if it was a little I would too, but mine had me thinking if the cramps became any stronger some place in me was going to rip. Really painful, couldn't even sleep.

I cannot touch raw banana's so I totally feel your pain. The last one I attempted to eat was over a year ago. Come to think about it, about the same time I started having my symptoms.

Hi, I never thought bananas were a problem........untill yesterday!!
I had one at about 10am and within a hour later (in my lecture) i noticed i was getting some mild pain...... then throughout the WHOLE day i had the WORST gas i think ive ever had!!! I didint know it was possible to produce that much - and i usually produce alot! lol!
Then all last night and today ive had pretty severe cramps and D.
I cant say for sure it was the banana, but im never touching one again! lol! - Never really liked em that much anyway! :)

I've had crohns for 3 yrs now and the one thing that absolutely kills me is a bananas. The worst cramps i've ever had, had to go to the nurse. She gave me ~30mls of pepto bismol and i felt better in about an hour. So thats what i suggest. Its a terrible pity as i loved bananas...oooo banana splits. I can't stand mushy ones, so i guess i'll just pass from now on. I have heard of links between banana sensitivities and latex. I used to get rashes from the latex gloves. I work in a lab and now use nitrile gloves instead.

Well, I worked in 'clean room' environment (computer chip facility) and allergies to latex DID occur. Never heard of a connection to bananas... thought the rubber tree and banana plant were totally different species - except for the wax banana

I can't digest bananas...plain. My stomach goes crazy, but when my mom makes banana pancakes I'm ok. Just the wheat that upsets my stomach a little. I think I'm going to try just baking bananas.

Have you tried really ripe ones or pureed ones?

Not sure if you are talking to me. The ones with a few black spots give me problems. The ones that turn all black. I don't bother touching those. I haven't tried it pureed.

Same with me. Years before I was even diagnosed I got horrible pain from raw bananas, never knew why. When they are ripe with black spots then I have no problems!

Its the starch, when banana ripens it turns to sugars that are easier to digest.
