Hi my son was dx with Crohns and has been running low grade fevers on and off. They come on at night...then the next day gone....back again at night at about 100... Can that be caused by a flare up...meaning the Crohns is active when this low grade fever is present? He is on 6mp...so the doc always thinks he picked up an infection,,,,but I think the fever is from the CRohns..any thoughts? Debbie

Welll, as to your son's fevers, I can't comment. However, I will typically run hot/cold. I picked up the thermometer, and sure enuff, I would jump up in temp a degree & 1/2 or 2, then drop down to normal. Mine didn't seem to relate to flares or anything else I could point my finger to/at. It's possible that I've experienced minor 'secondary' or 'tertiary' infections due to the immuno suppressors I'm on, or that inflamation of the digestive system is causing these, esp. since it is most active during the evenings. I have seen me feeling perishingly cold while sweating bullets the size of gumboots. I would suggest a journal/diary of everything your son does, eats, drinks, etc.. with a specific timetable, to see if you can correlate it to the fever. I was never able to, and I just came to accept it, but every case is a little different, and such diligence might put you onto the trigger for these fevers.

I agree with Kev -- I also have had fevers come and go for no reason, but that has happened to me since I got Mono many years ago, but it could be for any reason. I know that our white blood cell count bounces around a lot with this illness and perhaps he is reacting to that. I would definitely discuss this fully with his doctors and keep an hour by hour log. Just get a cheap-o day planner or do it on the calendar function on your computer and type notes about what he eats and how much and any reactions. It will benefit him in the long run to have data kept on himself.

I used to have frequent fevers every month opr so, which last for a day and make me feel sick for a while. After about a year of this, It was related to my Crohn's and after a few months on Prenisone they were gone. Now they come back, but not that often........... I suggest you chekc with the GI for this

I know when i go through a flare up i experience ups and downs with my body temperature. I have never taken my temperature when this happens though.

I didn't bother taking my temperature either, till I was talking to a doctor in the ER. He asked me how hi my fever had gone... and I had to admit I had no idea. Then he suggested the thermometer thing.. embarrassingly enuff, I used to have (still do, but not sure where) a digital thermometer I used on the kids. Knew it was floating around somewhere, just needed new batteries. Those would have cost $4 + tax, and a brand new thermometer with batteries was $6.99 no tax (why, I dunno, quirk of our local tax laws on products considered 'health' products).. Anyway, whenever I have one of these mini fevers, I take a minute to check temp..
Least this ways, if I do end up in the ER, or talking about it to my GP or GI, I have a 'real' number to pass on... rather than a stupid story about running hot/cold..

Could be the Crohn's. I spiked fevers so frequently during flares when I was younger I instinctively know now when one is coming on because of the way my body feels. So yeah, you can have low grade fevers (and sometimes high grade, had one once that topped 105 before I got some tylenol not long after I was first diagnosed) with a Crohn's flare up. It's listed as one of the symptoms of Crohn's too and something my doctor always wanted to know about.
