Hello everyone,

Being new to Crohn's, every pain or discomfort my son has freaks me out, to be quite honest. Is there a way to distinguish what is "normal" pain or discomfort for a Crohns patient versus what is serious and needs to be addressed immediately? I guess I am wondering how I can tell what is 'par for the course' and what I should look for that isn't.

He has been having pains since last night, on and off, and hasn't had a BM since yesterday earlier in the day. I am starting to worry he has another blockage. He actually already has an appointment set up with a surgeon this afternoon to go over his last x-rays (has 6 cm of small intestine that is very narrowed that they are concerned about) so I am glad to be seeing him, but I am also wondering for future reference what is 'normal' and what is not.

Thank you so much for your help!

Kelly

Hi Kelly,

Sorry you and your son are having to deal with this. This disease acts differently in every one of us - what is 'normal' for one is 'abnormal' for another. For me, it just took time and experience to learn how my disease behaves and what I should and shouldn't worry about. Wish I could give you a more concrete answer.

However, anytime you are concerned, best to call the doctor. S/he is probably the best judge of what needs to be done.

Hang in there!

Hey Kelly,

As Babs said, it is a highly individual thing. I think you learn to know what is normal for your child and what isn't, even though they can have a very high pain threshold you'll know when it's serious. When Roo's situation became critical I wasn't left guessing...........she was curled in a ball with pain, vomiting, febrile, moaning and crying.

Dusty. :)
