I'm just wondering if anyone has any tips for thickening things or otherwise improving mega D. For several days I have had D that is supremely urgent, and is almost entirely liquid. Pretty much like a prep and I'm fairly sure I didn't drink one in my sleep! I don't want to resort to meds as I have a partial blockage. I have been eating white rice, and marshmallows in an effort to change things. Does anyone have any suggestions? Also with the marshmallows and jelly babies thing does anyone know if its the gelatine or is it other ingredients?

Thank you superstars x

If you have a partial blockage you gotta be very careful and low fiber. Peanut butter works like a charm for me but just don't get clogged please!

I tried peanut butter and I was violently ill and in agony. I usually just limit my diet to fluids until it passes. Sorry that you are in this position.

I have the same thing all the time. Stay away from sugar-free... aspartame? I think, can cause D. I restrict liquids too, but the watery D returns as soon as I drink anything. Sometimes really dry food like pretzels or dry cookies helps. YMMV

I believe it's the pectin in jelly babies that helps thicken stool. It's in apple sauce too.

Be careful you're not getting dehydrated too.

what about eating some gently boiled fish along with your rice? fish protein is very low in fiber. For fruits or vegetables, try extracted juices instead to remove pulp and most fiber inside. Marshmallow scares me. I firmly belive any highly processed food has the capacity to make us ill in the long term. with the weakness that we already have, its safer not to eat that kind of ''food'', if we can call this food...

Honestly I wouldn't eat any sugar. When you have a narrowing causing partial blockages it's best to go on a strict low residue diet (does not include sugar unless it's an actual fruit so no candy) and increase your fluids. Also try eating smaller meals more often. If all you're eating is sugar/candy then it will just make your diarrhea worse.

Fructose. Fructose, a sugar found naturally in fruits and honey and added as a sweetener to some beverages, can cause diarrhea in people who have trouble digesting it.
Artificial sweeteners. Sorbitol and mannitol, artificial sweeteners found in chewing gum and other sugar-free products, can cause diarrhea in some otherwise healthy people

If you want a natural remedy then talk to your doctor about adding Psyllium Husk to your low residue diet. Bulking up your stool is always tricky when you have a narrowing so you don't want too much of anything as you want to avoid a full blockage. Good luck and keep us posted. :)

Won't cutting out sugar and sticking to low residue be extremely restrictive? What's left to eat?

My doctors always recommend marshmallow and jelly babies since I've had an ileostomy. They're a good way to thicken up output (or stop diarrhoea, for people without stomas). I agree about the fish though - fish and white meat aren't likely to aggravate diarrhoea and you need protein. Smooth peanut butter usually helps me too.

It is hard to be low fiber and low sugar because you mainly rely on dairy and simple carbs but certainly you can still be smart about it. It's better a person get their sugar from a slice of white bread than a slice of cake.

Thanks everyone. There is quite a bit there that I have not tried yet and it's nice to have more options as my diet has got more restricted over time. I have been on the low firber for several months and only eat small amounts. I definately had a better diet before I was restricted, I probably sounded like the marshmallow man! I can usually tolerate a small fruit juice as long as it's not after eating. I just want to get back to old the D I was having which was tolerable.
