Hi
My 9 year old daughter was diagnosed with Crohn's in November 2012. In the beginning we thought that the skin tags she had were hemorrhoids. Only symptom. Of course never went away. Went to pediatric GI and was told Crohn's. Went for second opinion because I couldn't figure out what Crohn's had to do with the skin tags. New GI has reviewed everything, colonoscopy, Endoscopy, blood and stool results and believes that she has Perianal Crohn's. Made more sense. She is currently taking Asacol, flagyl, and carafate. So far the meds are not taking the pain away from her butt. Every time she has to go to the bathroom, shes starts to cry, curls up in her bed and hides because she doesn't want to go.There is no bleeding, no constipation, no diarrhea. She doesn't complain about her stomach to much. A little gurgling and a little pain every now and then. The new doctor wants to start her on Remicade. Doctor states that my daughters skin tags are not normal for her age. The side effects I have read about Remicade scares me. I don't know if I can put her on Remicade. Any advice???

I have perianal Crohn's and am on Remicade, but my doc suggested it because I have fistulas that just won't heal. I also have skin tags and my doc didn't seem too concerned about them, though for a 9 year old it may be a different case. I honestly haven't heard of anyone being put on Remicade just for skin tags, I would be a little hesitant too.

Maybe seek out a second opinion before putting her on such a strong drug. I mean honestly if it is only her anal area that is havig the issue, maybe there is some other less agressive drug they can give her to start off with to see if that helps. I am so sorry your little girl is going through all this. No kids should ever get sick in my opinion :(

The thing with perianal disease is, there are not many options for drugs. Antibiotics are a temporary fix. The other options are really surgery or biologics. Some people have had some success with some other drugs, but it's not really the norm. If it's just skin tags, I would be inclined to leave it untreated unless they were unbearably painful.

Kim007, Our pediatric GI has a Remicade clinic with over 100 patients with Crohns Disease. He says the #1 treatment for fistulizing disease(Crohns related) is Remicade. The youngest he treats is 5 yrs. If your child has skin tags this is Crohns. My daughter had absolutely no other symptoms except for butt pain which turned out to be two perianal fistulas. Her upper GI did show ulcers in stomach and small intestine even though she was not symptomatic. Don't have to have the typical belly pain and wt loss.My daughter has done well with Remicade and surgeon placed Setons which have done their job.

How is she doing?

I wouldn't be too scared about the side effects of Remicade. The increased chance of Lymphoma is very small. My doctor believes that there is a net decrease in the chance of getting cancer when I am on remicade because there is not the constant inflammation.
