Well I am 12 days post OP after a sm & lg bowel resection, done in a regular way without laparoscope.

Had some complications with spiking fevers and BP dropping and climbing, and fluid buildup in my lungs. Had a walking epidural for 4 days which kind of froze my chest expansion so had a little deep breathing difficulty.

Finally discharged from hospital after 11 days in. Slowly feeling better, so glad to be home.

My surgeon was AMAZING and very thorough and considerate, I couldn't ask for better.

Wondering, how long before your stomach returns to somewhat normal size? How long before a regular BM?

Still having diahhrea but they let me leave the hosp. Am taking a bile powder that reduces the bile in your bowels which comes from Short Bowel Syndrome. Slowly helping to make things a little more solid.

How long does it take to heal, inside and out?

I have a couple other arthritic related conditions that complicated things a bit pain wise but am off the hospital drugs like Dilaudid and am on Tylenol and Tramadol for pain now.

Any words of wisdom?
Thanks in advance.

On the windy road to recovery, but feeling positive... ;-)

I can't give you any insights into how long your healing process will be but I wish you the very best of luck, and hope you will be feeling better very, very soon. I hope you have a nice support system around you (family)!

I find what some of my fellow humans on this site are able to endure to be truly humbling. Truly. As the old Kipling quote goes, "You're a better man than I am (Gunga Din)!"

Hi. I had a resection about 4 months ago. Give it time and things will start to get better. Try to rest as much as possible, and try to get as much protein and vitamines in your body so it will heal faster. For me it took about 3 weeks to have less pain and be able to function better. Hopefully, every day you feel better than the last.

Depends on the incision used and what all they did. It also depends on how old you are and how much nutrition you are getting.

My first two bowel resections they cut out 6 inches near my terminal ilium both times. They also made a foot long incision from above my belly button to just above my groin. That took 2-4 months to fully heal.

It will probably less than a month for the bowels to heal. As for the incision without knowing more I can't help.

I had an resection in January this year ... It was hard for me coz I had 44 kg before operation, thank god I survived that.

Anyway just be patient ... I had pain while getting out of the bed for about 40 days. First week post-op was very tough, but later I got used to it, and found my way how to get out of the bed :)

I had diahhrea for first month ... then later it was more soft stool. And now, few months later, everything is just PERFECT. Im playing basketball again (couldnt do that for more than year), im 90% in remission (started imuran recently so will see how it goes).

Hang in there, just be positive ...

I've never had a resection but had a colostomy about 5 months ago. I was up and about after about 3 weeks, but it took about 3 months for me to feel normal. I have the big lovely scar too, and even after 5 months mine is still red and angry looking even though it healed fine. I'm finally just getting feeling back in some places along the scar. I can't tell you how long it will take before you have regular BM's since I'm not in your situation.

Keep up the positive attitude and that should take you a long way to recovery :)

Hiya
Haven't had any Crohns surgery but I wish you a speedy recovery and a happy painfree remission!
good luck, take it easy, nice & slow

I was eating turkey dinner 2 1/2 months later. Still working on my lower abdominal muscle strength going on 7 months now. And I still feel a bit of pain when I push myself too hard inside but all in all three months tops for me to back ontop of everything.

hope you get some Crohns fee time for a good long while :)

Good advice, thank you. Was it long before you were eating regularly and having a normal BM?

They removed about a foot of sm & lg bowel incl the Terminal Ileum in total. The outer incision is about 4-5 inches and he used staples, as for the inside, I am not certain, I believe it only had to be joined in one area of the bowel but I don't know how long the inner stitches are. I am 40ish and started eating food about 6 days ago. Already I am eating small meals of well cooked meat, veg's & starch like rice or mashed pot's. Am also eating fruit and drinking juices so it's coming along. I am taking probiotics but haven't started supplements yet. Can I intruduce those now, ie: multivite, vit d etc.?? Thanks for your input.

:ylol2:

On the WINDY road? I think it is supposed to be the winding road, but I think windy is more appropriate here, lol...

I had a resection in 1994 and I spent two weeks in the hospital.
When I got back home I felt better day by day. In three months time I felt like a million bucks with no pain and no symptoms of Crohn at all.

I hope get well soon. :)
