I'm currently in a flare and the worst case scenario is that I'll have the diseased section of my bowel removed. It's the last 40cm that are inflamed, so mainly the sigmoid colon. I believe this makes up about 1/4 of the colon?

Has anyone had a similar surgery and if so would you mind telling me what this has done to your bowel movements? I'm a bit concerned about the prospect of having D for the rest of my life!

Thanks :)

I've never had a resection myself but from what I've read you may have less formed bowel movements at the start but I think your GI tract adapts to it and gradually it gets better.

Hi Ian I have had two resections but had about 20 feet removed and had d for at least12 yrs but now have a bag which will be reversed but am sure will go back to not having a normal poo anymore!

I've read that the right colon is the part that does the job of absorbing water from stool. The Sigmoid is the final part of the left colon. So, it sounds like things would be ok. By the time stool reached the sigmiod, it would be mostly in it's formed state.
I had my right colon removed before I had the entire thing removed, and my Diarrhea was worse after.

Good luck if you need surgery.
