resveratrol: really cool stuff

Saw this the other day doing some google searching. This is a link to a 60 Minutes video on some of the research done into a substance called resveratrol found in red wine. This particular substance is very interesting because it is believed to be the substance involved in not only bacterial and fungal protection of grapes but also believed to be the possible reason why the French have high fat diets, drink decent amounts of wine, and yet have fewer problems with heart disease statistically. The reason I thought it was pretty cool was because of the bacterial protection factor and turning on the body's survival genes to protect from disease and the fact that GlaxoSmithKline bought the startup company that was doing the research on this stuff for almost $750 million USD.

According to the doctors the research is coming along quickly and human trials of their synthetic version of resveratrol may commence fairly soon.

synthetic or not, if it works you can get this stuff naturally. muscadine grapes have extremely high levels of this stuff even more so than the popular red wines made from vinifera grapes.

Some more info on it

This research has also shown that Resveratrol is both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory.

Other findings have shown that this herb/chemical of the plant, can accumulate in the cells of the digestive tract and the human airway. This means that Resveratrol could exercise it’s anticancer properties in the colon, esophagus, trachea, or throat

I would take this substance seriously as a possible supplement for Crohn's. If there a pharmaceutical company trying to synthesize it, then that is pretty good evidence that it does most of what is claimed.

You are also seeing the reason why the drug version will have a fair chance of being approved for treating disease, and yet the original, natural substance, will be in a limbo and not approved for treating disease.

If you can synthesize it, you can patent it and make huge money. It may not even work as well but the patent and subsequent clinical trials is what matters most. It certainly will cost much more than the original natural product.

While I too have heard great things about resveratol, I would like to simply point out that it is highly unlikely that a single component of red wine is the cause of its beneficial health profile (looking at it from a biological sense). That aside, I think it would probably be an excellent addition to the diet because of its numerous beneficial properties. I might add however, I'd just as soon sit down with a nice glass of red wine and enjoy my resveratol that way than in pill form :). Of course not all of us tolerate alcohol well so this is a good alternative to getting some benefits of this as a supplement.

Yay! So this means I can drink a glass of red wine everyday and it would be helping me. I sure hope so.

well if you can't tolerate alcohol there are a variety of resveratrol supplements you can buy online from health food sites. i'm fairly sure you could probably get a decent amount from eating grapes also though since it is concentrated in the skins. you need to do some research on which grape varieties offer the most though in the skins as they vary from type to type. some studies suggest that muscadine grapes offer more than any other type of grape so that could be something to look in to (muscadine grape seed extract maybe?). worth checking out anyways.

My doctor said absolutely no alcohol. also grapes are a big No due to seeds and the sin.Do you think this substance is avajlable in red grape juice?

Study published in the European Journal of Pharmacology suggests Resveratrol as a possible treatment for IBD.

I'll drink to that!

I tried a Resveratrol supplement a while back. Ugh. It smelled terrible, tasted terrible, and even worse when I started burping it. It was awful! It even made my stomach hurt. Hopefully there is one out there that doesn't cause so many side effects.

I use capsules that disolves in intestine. so no bad taste problems :) in the first days it will be worse but after cca. 14 days comes rapid improvement.

Sunflower, I purchased Source Naturals brand resveratrol for general health and had a similar experience as you. What brand did you use? Milan, what brand do you use?

I use (Evelor-from Medochemie) but composition seems to be very similar. the only problems I had was when i took it before sleep. than i woke up sverel times a night and had nightmares too :) so take it in the mornign :)

I don't have CD but do have intense lactose intolerance with pain on the right middle (right where my neighbor's CD hits him) so can't really say if it helps - plus after only a day or two of bad smell and the nightmares, I gave it up. One day every few weeks I'll take a pill figuring it can't hurt but haven't really stayed with it. Does it help you?

i take 3 pils (240mg resveratrol) a day and have never had such a fast improvement of CD. before two years i bit of my intestine was resected and two months ago i started to feel it is going to be bad again. after resveratrol treatment for about 3 weeks and no corticoids i have almost no symptoms. its like a miracle :) i wish you to pass your intolerance and use benefits of it too

morning everyone, can you tell me exactly where you go to buy these products?.. i usually use amazon.com but not sure if it is sold there

Good morning =). Yep Amazon has a nice variety of brands. I get various herbal things on Amazon, and have had good luck. Love that you can read everyone's reviews to help with decision making.

hi can someone give me the name of the one they order .. im looking at all of them and i really not sure which one to choose since some are saying this product give them diarrhea, and some are saying the product doesnt work for them.. thanks so much

Resveratrol Premium Resveratrol Juice Extreem Ultra. Spc, this is the one I will try next though I haven't tried it yet. It looks like it's very well reviewed on Amazon and a good value. Let us know what you pick and how it works and I'll report back, too. <3
