resveratrol: really cool stuff
Saw this the other day doing some google searching. This is a link to a 60 Minutes video on some of the research done into a substance called resveratrol found in red wine. This particular substance is very interesting because it is believed to be the substance involved in not only bacterial and fungal protection of grapes but also believed to be the possible reason why the French have high fat diets, drink decent amounts of wine, and yet have fewer problems with heart disease statistically. The reason I thought it was pretty cool was because of the bacterial protection factor and turning on the body's survival genes to protect from disease and the fact that GlaxoSmithKline bought the startup company that was doing the research on this stuff for almost $750 million USD.

According to the doctors the research is coming along quickly and human trials of their synthetic version of resveratrol may commence fairly soon.
synthetic or not, if it works you can get this stuff naturally. muscadine grapes have extremely high levels of this stuff even more so than the popular red wines made from vinifera grapes.
