hi everyone,my story is a long one like everyone else, but to cut it short i got surgery in 2009,perforated intestine due to active Crohn's/colitis.i was told i was elidgble for reversal surgery in the future, but i seem to have sunk into a spiral of having a colonoscopy being told i have existing inflammation, waiting 5 months to see a consultant,to be asked to go for a further colonoscopy, this has been going on since january 2009.i have been on aizathiaprine which doesnt seem to have worked and also prednisilone on and off over these four years.i have had in the region of 8-10 colonoscopies analy and through the site of stoma,i have been told by a doctor doing the colonoscopy that the only true way to clear up inflammation is to reconnect and let food and nourishment go through the intestine, but they refuse to touch me whilst there is inflammation.can anyone tell me if they have had surgery whilst having active inflammation? thanks sarah.

I'm going to tag Jim (POPS) to see if he has any info to share with you about his reversal. Sorry you haven't had any responses yet.

They generally don't like to operate unless your disease is under control, one reason is the join may not heal and leak if they reconnect and there is active disease present.

sasie30,
Hi there. I'm sorry your going through this.

I did have a reversal in Aug 2012. I had the ostomy bag because of a resetion that went bad and broke open leaving me septic. I had the bag for 9 months before the reversal.

The surgeon did all kinds of test before the reversal looking for active crohns and found none. They would not do the reversal if active crohns/inflammation was found, nor would I want them to do it if found. You see, they did the first resection when I had active crohns and thats why it went bad.

Two months after my resetion I started to have a flair. I guess I was lucky that the reversal went well. I don't think any surgeon will do a reversal with active crohns/inflammation.

A foot note: I liked my bag, I could eat anything I wanted and do anything I wanted. I tend to think it keeps the crohns somewhat under control, but it may not.
(My wife also has a ilyostomy bag for life due to colitis, so we know a bit about having a bag. lol)
I hope this helps you. If I can be of ANY support, please send me a PM or a friend request.

I hope things work out for you.

My understanding is that they give you a bag so your bowels are given a chance to rest and heal. Reconnecting while its not healed would make having the bag in the first place completely pointless wouldn't it Jim (POPS)?

Hi Sadie
I have a bag and had active colitis in the stump.
The surgeon told me the inflammation was probably caused by the lack of an enzyme in poop that passes through the stump.
It has been treated effectively with salofalk foam enemas.
I am now on track to get my reversal in August.
Hope you can find a remedy for yours.
