I read an article that suggested that more crohnies were rh- and was just wondering how many of us out there (or at least here) are rh- ?

I am supposedly A+; however, my daughter is O-. We still need to find out what Scott is.

A- here. I think that about 15% of the general population is rh-.

I always thought that O+ was the most common blood type.

I'm A rh-

It was a nightmare when my negative blood saw the rh+ baby I was carrying as an alien and started to reject her. I was given the anti d *** and had a major allergic reaction to that (hospitallised). I've now produced the antibodies to a rh + baby so no more babies for me!!!! :(

Your husband would have to be OO while you are AO for your daughter to come out as O. The reason for this is the O bloodtype is a recessive trait, so if she has either the A or B antigen, then she would be A or B bloodtype. Because she is type O- that means your husband _should_ be O- as well since from my quick lookup of Rh factor inheritance negative (-) is a recessive allele as well, meaning both copies of your husbands Rh allele (the one used for this nomenclature at least) would have to be (-) for her to be negative, while you would need at least 1 negative (-) allele. Most likely based on the information available:

You: A/O +/-
Husband: O/O -/-
Daughter: O/O -/-

As some interesting information, your daughter(and likely husband) is considered a universal donor because all other people can receive her blood in a transfusion, meaning the red-cross would love her to donate when she is able to. On the flip-side she can ONLY get type O- blood because of the way blood works. Because of this, I would see if your local hospital or red cross has a blood credit type program (I believe they exist) where she (or your husband if I am right about his bloodtype, which genetics seems to say I am) can donate now and then have a credit for if she needs surgery or an emergency transfusion at some point, due to the supply of O- blood being scarce.

Here is a link with information about ABO type and there is an Rh factor page there as well: http://www.biology.arizona.edu/human_bio/problem_sets/blood_types/markers.html

Your doctor should be able to verify this information, but assuming you know you are A+ and your daughter is O- it pretty much tells us exactly what your's and your husband's blood types are :)

That makes sense as my father is an O and my mother is an AB. I turned out to be an A. A blood is the second most common type. O is actually the most common. AB is the most rare.

Do any of you donate blood? Are we able to? I have found conflicting information on this. I think a lot of people with Crohn's don't because they have low iron?

Hey I wished I could. We have a plasma donor here in Thunder bay. I asked and they said no that giving blood or plasma if you have any type if IBD even if you are not a bleeder, they will deny you. Canada doesn't even get paid to. So my husband and my daughter both donate when they can.;)

Thanks for the info. Did they tell you why or do they just assume if you have IBD you need all your blood? :p

Good to know! I really have been wanting to give blood, but I have been avoiding it thus far because I am an impossible draw. :p The blood bank used to hound my dad as soon as he was eligible to give again because of being a universal donor.
