Right hemicolectomy

Hi

I have just been to the consultant and after explaining my symptoms said I have an obstruction to my TI and recommended a right hemicolectomy surgery.

It was such a suprise as I thought my symptoms could just be cured with some tablets. Bit of a shock. He agreed to put me on some tablets for next 3 months called Budenofalk. Has anyone had these tablets and the obstruction cured itself? If so how long did it take for you to start felling better?

Surgery is the very last resort for me as I want all my bits (thank you very much!) They said it will be done as key hole... as anyone had or is in the same situation as me?

I am also hoping that these tablets wont bloat me up like a balloon... just taken first lot so here's hoping.

Any support would be much appreciated as im feeling rather low at the moment and just want to be "normal" again...

I had a keyhole surgery back in January and it went really well. They make a smallish incision down your belly button and two smaller ones above it. With mine, they did a hand-assisted, so my incision was a little bit bigger.

As for just explaining your symptoms, are they going to do any testing to make sure of all of this before they do the surgery? I would ask for tests just to make sure. If it is caused by inflammation it can be helped with steroids, if you have stricturing from scar tissue, then yes you would need surgery.

Thank you for your replies, I am having a Barium follow through next week so I guess that will tell us how narrow and what exactly is the problem.

I am still hoping that these tablets work though and i don't need surgery but I guess I will need to at some point. I guess when I get so fed up of eating mushy foods and foods with no skins on that i will decide enough is enough.

I just hope that my intestines don't burst! I guess the major thing would be a complete blockage and then I will have no option but to have the surgery.

Work have been great with me which is really good too.

Good luck BettyBoop. My surgery was planned after I ended up in the hospital with a blockage for 5 days last year. They got me working well enough with tons of solumedrol to send me home but it certainly changed my perspective on surgery. My tests were all pretty much inconclusive until we did a pill cam and it got stuck. My friend just had the same surgery but she waited until she woke up in tons of pain and went to the ER. She wasn't blocked but had been planning on surgery so they got her into the emergency schedule. Waiting for 2 months was a pain but I still think I'd prefer that to ending up in the ER and having surprise surgery.

Just a thought, if you're on that edge I'd suggest packing a bag for the ER just in case. I kept toiletries, some undies and copies of a few of my records if I'm not going to the hospital that normally treats me.

Hi I had keyhole surgery but all of my large bowel removed it was only supposed to be the siqmoid at first until they realised that my bowel wasn't doing me any favours what so ever. Mine was done laparoscopically(hand assisted) with smaller incisions at the bottom of my stomach with one larger one through my belly bottom. I was in so much pain after wards and took me 3 months to recover and 3 months to not get any pain. Good luck and keep us posted x
