Sargramostim

Crohn's Disease Forum

Help Support Crohn's Disease Forum:

Asking b/c Hannah had to stop 6MP due to white blood count too low. Docs are suggesting this as an alternative. I feel hopeful. . . cautiously. Just wondering if anyone has experience with it.

more on Sargramostim

Sargramostim (SRG or GM-CSF which stands for granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor) was initially developed as a medication to bump up bone marrow production. As doctors/researchers learn more about the genetics of Crohns, they have found a connection with how this med stimulates bone marrow production (tweaking the immune system, if you will) and a positive response in Crohns patients. Early adult studies with small samples were extremely positive. Later adult studies with really large samples, less impressive. Now being revisited b/c they are finding that Crohns is a compilation of different diseases and so, just as some people (e.g., my daughter) don't respond to TNF blockers, some won't respond to this. A recent pediatric trial was quite successful. Of the 19 patients who finished the trial (3 dropped out), 16 achieved remission. It is well tolerated and safer even than 6MP. I am so excited about this!!! I love that our fabulous doctor had something up his sleeve I was unaware of - - I was always two steps ahead of our last doctor! I love that it is relatively safe and that it may get at the root of Hannah's Crohns, which is her impaired innate immune system. :Karl: I'll keep you all posted. I am including a link to the pediatric trial article below. I'm no medical researcher, but this reads similarly to how LDN works for some people - it revs the immune system to self regulate better. So cool! So cool, in fact, that I am using emoticons for the first time ever!! :grr1d:
