Im 17 years old and my GI thinks i have crohns disease. Im abnormally short, 4'9 and I've been having lots of blood come out. Im gettting a colonoscopy soon. Does it hurt afterwords? Im definitely not taking the news well...

Hello Drummer. Welcome to the forum. I'm sorry about the possibility of Crohn's It's not fun to live with, but it's not a death sentence.

The colonoscopy is easy, but the prep that you'll have to drink beforehand is yucky. You'll just want to stay near a toilet. And I don't remember having any pain afterwards.

How long have you been having symptoms? What other tests has your doctor done that causes him to believe it's Crohn's? When is your colonoscopy scheduled?

Hang in there and try, try, try to be strong.

Hello and welcome to the board! I'm sorry that you're looking at a Crohn's diagnosis but it can be such a relief to put a name to a face so to speak in relation to your symptoms and to get onto a treatment to have you feeling better.

Hi Drumer,

My son was 14 when diagnosed with Crohns last January after a Colonoscopy. He had no problems at all afterwards with any pain at all. We were also relived to finally have an answer about his weight gain and size.

Good luck and keep us posted. Try to stay positive as I know it must be really hard for you right now.

Hi Drummer,
welcome. the prep is horrible as far as the amount of time in the restroom, but the procedure is fine. I was tender, but not in pain after, but they had to stop mine because the swelling was too much for them to get through. Honestly it is scary because you haven't done it before, but it'll be ok and hopefully you will get some answers which will make you feel better as well. Good luck!

Hello Drummer and welcome to the forum. It's not a great diagnosis to have but remember you have found this forum now and you have us for lots of help and support  The prep for the colonoscopy is the worst part of the procedure in my opinion, you will need to be near the loo and the stuff does not taste good at all. The only thing I have noticed after the procedure is a bit of bloating due to the air they have pumped through, this can be a bit uncomfy but to be honest once you have had a good fart this gets better :) This is by far the best procedure to have though to get a really good picture of what is happening inside. Do you have an appt date yet? Has your doc got you on any meds presently to help with symptoms?

Thanks guys im glad I found this forum. Its not a subject you can really talk to people about without getting embarrassed. And Im having the procedure done on Tuesday. How long will I have wait to get a definitive diagnosis? I forgot to ask the docter.

We were told right after the colonoscopy that my son had crohn's. The Dr. did many biopsies and said they would need to wait to get those back to be sure but he felt quite certain. Crohn's can show up anywhere but mostly in small and or large bowel. Ulcerative colitis shows up in Colon (large bowel) only and usually has continuous inflammation where as Crohn's has patches of healthy colon with patches of inflammation. Or you could have Celiac disease which is gluten allergy and that looks different as well. The biopsy takes a few days but your Dr. should have a good idea of what you are dealing with right away. I know it is scary. But the good news is they should be able to get you treatment now and hopefully make you feel a lot better. A lot of people on this forum are going through an especially difficult time, or are just newly diagnosed. So much of what you read are when people are going through difficult times and not what is normally experienced on a daily basis with this disease. I wish you luck tomorrow, and ((((hugs))))).

As Johnnysmum has just said the doc will be able to give a fair bit of info right after the procedure, you have to have someone with you to take you home so make sure they makes notes for you as you might be too drowsy to take it all in. Results from any biopsies will take a bit longer. Initially I found crohns incredibly embarrasing to talk about (I was diasnosed shortly before by 17th birthday) but over time and after various exams and procedures that involve people looking at my butt I did get over this. One thing about this forum is if you have an embarrasing story to tell you can guarantee that most people have had the same experience and at least one other person as had something so much worse happen to them so we can all commiserate and laugh (yes laugh) about it.

I had a colonoscopy last week. I was sooooo scared! It's really nothin! Like everyone says, the prep was a pain! I felt terrible! Afterwards I had some pain due to air in my colon but as angry bird says, a few good farts help. Haha. I felt almost normal by the time I went to bed that night which was only about 4 hours after the procedure.

Welcome Drummer211 - you've come to the right place to discuss colonoscopies (sp). I've had a few since I was diagnosed in 1986 and the worst thing is the prep work - spent most of my time in the loo. The actual procedure isn't too bad but you do feel bloated afterwards as they pump air in to get a good clear view of what's happening. And you'll find you fart quite a bit afterwards due to all that air - me and my family used to joke about it saying I could power the car at the rate I was letting them off.
That's how we've dealt with it - all my problems - treat it as a laugh and I've found it easier to deal with all the crap that comes my way health wise.
I wish you lots of luck with your colonoscopy and I hope they let you know the diagnosis as soon as - Crohn's isn't a nice thing to have but it's manageable and you can live a pretty full life with it.
Keep us posted
Many hugs xx

Hey Drummer,
Hope for the best for you. Crohn's sucks, but as people say, it's not the end of the world.
2 things I wanted to mention about the prep:
--first, ask if you can mix the prep-stuff with something other than water. We used ginger ail (shake out the bubbles first) and drank it cold with a straw and it *really* helps.
-- also, get some hard candy (mints are great) to suck on in between the drinks. It helps. Trust me.

Afterwards. no, the pain from the test isn't much. It will take a day or so for your body to recover from the lack of food, so plan to rest. But other than that, you'll be ok.
Good luck with the diagnosis. Blood coming out isn't good, but it could be lots of things -- some worse than others.
Hope for the best and keep us posted.

One good thing about having all of my colon removed is that I will never have to drink that prep again! :rof:

Thank you everyone! Im just anxious to find out whats wrong. Though i am starting to connect the dots. I think my inflamed sinuses ive had my entire life is caused by my possible crohns. Plus i react badly now to greasy foods like frenchfries. At least i get to miss school on Tuesday for the colonoscopy!

Good luck Drummer - hope it all goes well and let us know how you get on

 for luck

I've had the opposite experience from most of those who have posted. I didn't mind the prep at all. I didn't eat much before starting the prep, so there wasn't much that needed to be expunged. But I opted for a colonoscopy without sedative so it was a bit uncomfortable but I felt 100% fine afterwards with no pain and even better no grogginess from the sedative (and I could leave immediately after).

With my crohn's in the ileum (end of the small intestine) though, the colonoscopy didn't reveal and they could only eliminate a few possibilities. I had to go back for barium x-rays before I was able to be diagnosed.

And Good Luck!

Good luck Drummer! Like others have said, the prep is the worst part and you will wake up bloated. After my last colonoscopy I woke up in recovery and the male nurse came in and said "You are now in the fart zone, let her rip" and boy did I! :stinks:

I was given a Crohn's diagnosis there in recovery and was later confirmed by the biopsy results.

Again good luck and keep us updated!

okay the prep is AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL. Im was alright during most of the day but now its starting to kick in and i just feel sick and did i say AWFUL!!!

Hang in there sweetheart  Have you drank all the prep or do you have anymore to do? If you actually start being sick and you just cannot get it down and getting the gag relflex don't try and force it. I was throwing up a lot when I had my colonoscopy last month and in the end I didn't even try to drink the 2nd lot of stuff, I made the hosp staff fully aware of this and it didn't cause an issue. Also do you have any barrier cream (nappy rash cream) about? This will help with the soreness that you most probably have now.

I agree with Angry Bird, don't force it! And yes the Desitin cream and wipes were wonderful! Hang in there, this is the worst part!

Hang in there, Drummer! I just had my first colonoscopy this past Friday (the 13th), and it wasn't so bad. You're experiencing the WORST part right now, the prep. Once you can't have anything else to drink a few hours before your test try swishing water around in your mouth to keep the cotton mouth away. That helped me. Also, if you're like me, I was really nervous about waking up during the test, so tell the nurse or doctor that you want a lot of the sleepy time drug! I woke up once during the test and they gave me more of the drug and I was fine. Afterwards you get some free hospital snacks and you will begin to feel a lot better. My advice on what to eat as your "first meal" after the test- something soft. I made the mistake of eating a beef sandwich and my stomach hurt pretty bad because it was so big. Stick to stuff like pasta (if gluten doesn't bother you) or soup.

Good luck to you, my friend. They told me right after the test that I had Chron's , and I didn't exactly know what to think of it. I'm still a little overwhelmed by all this, but we are all here for you!

Keep us posted!

:dance:Yes, the prep is the worst. You won't feel the colonoscopy as you will be loopy. Drink through a straw as well so you don't have to taste it as much. I agree with the cold, mixing with something else and definitely hard candy in between drinks! I know this is a scary time, but this forum can be of some comfort. Good luck to you!

Thank you everyone. I have one more day of prep( today). ive already had two of the three drinks, but have not had any type of bowl movement(yes gross). Is that normal? Did i get it all out? I was in the bathroom a lot yesterday and felt very sick.

I'm a newbie here but after reading your post I was wondering...if your son has Crohn's, why was he gaining weight? That is scary to me! thank you!

I only had to drink twice. It seems odd that you haven't gone yet, have you thrown up? I actually threw up most of mine instead of bowel movements but I also had a small time after drinking it where it was both.. Maybe you're just lucky!! Haha

Got back from the proceure. Not good :((( apparenly after the thing was done i ripped out the needles, though i dont remember. lol The docter said i have TONS of ulcers and colitis or Ulcerative colitis( for sure) i dont remember which colitis and he strongly thinks i have crohns but he wants to wait for the results. :(((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((

Well, once they know for sure what it is, they'll know what to do about it. Hopefully, the worst is over now, you'll get a diagnosis, and they can tell you the best way to treat it. It's way better than not knowing what it is.

Pulling out the needles - sounds like something I would do, hahaha.

I agree completely, now that you know, you'll be able to treat it and start feeling better. I know for me, my paranoia of the unknown was the worst part when they started suspecting something.

Even though you still have to wait for a definitive diagnosis at least they didn't say they couldn't find anything wrong. Have they given you anything med wise to help with symptoms whilst you wait for the results?

Like everyone else has said, at least they saw what is causing your bleeding. It is not uncommon to do strange things coming out of anesthesia and not remember it. I usually ask anyone and everyone multiple times how long the procedure was and have no memory of it! Hopefully soon you will begin to feel better once you are on medication.

Well, the prep conversation is most interesting. Before the advent of the internet, I would drink whatever I was told to drink, huge gallon jugs of what tasted like waste oil from my car ----- disgusting ---- but the internet brought self-education and challenge.

Two years ago, I discovered Paco-salix, (I think that is how it's pronounced), and now when I have to have a bowel exam and I'm told to buy the gallon jug of poison, I head to the pharmacy and buy a packet of paco-salix.

one little envelope in 5 oz of water -- and it's OVER. no drinking crud all day long at regular intervals.

to make sure that one envelope will suffice, I don't eat at all two days before, just liquid ensure or something like that, and then the day before just the one envelope of PACO-SALIX and clear liquid all that day.

The results are the same of course, because we are clearing out our systems, but at least I get it over with in 5 easy ounces.

I did not ask permission first --- don't you find that some doctors just have this habit forming personality of telling you to do what has been done for decades?

So I just did it, and when I showed up, and they asked if I drank all that oily stuff, I said NO, I took one packet of Paco-Salix instead, and they said FINE.

The Paco-Salix box says take two packets, but I didn't eat the day before at all, just liquid, and I weigh about 105 pounds -- so I figured I could get by with one packet.

NO PROBLEM. And from now on, it's PACO-SALIX for me, regardless of what they tell me to drink.

It's a little more expensive than the jug of waste car oil, but I'd rather sell my car than drink that stuff.

Hey Drummer, based on those meds you should hopefully be feeling better in the next couple of days :) Let us kow how you are doing, have they said roughly when your follow up appt will be?

Hi Drummer - am keeping everything crossed that the meds start to work asap and you feel much better soon

Im feeling verrrrrry tired. Im suppose to get iron and calcium supplements soon so that should help. Overall, ive been feeling a little better with the stomach pains so hopefully i will be 100% or close to it in a couple of months.

Well i just got back from the hospital and hope to never have to do that again!! The bleeding has stoped for the most part. However i now take 10 pills a day, but im just glad to be better

Don't worry about the pills, once you get so that you remember to take them all, it becomes routine.

Hi Drummer

Sorry to hear the news wasn't good but am real pleased to hear you're back home now
Don't worry about the pills - they are a small price to pay if they keep you settled and make you feel better

Update. Im feeling pretty much 100% better, Crohns related at least. Prednisone is making my knees hurt, but it has also given me more energy during the day so thats a plus. haha

you are very courageous and it is great that you are improving, keep up the good work.
Hugs and best wishes
Trysha

Hi Drummer,

I'm glad you're feeling better :) You mentioned that you're 4'9. Are you male or female and are your parents very tall? I think we should start discussing whether or not you're suffering from malabsorption and make sure you get all your needed vitamins and nutrients. Has your doctor discussed any of this with your or diet related things?

100% is a really big improvement! :D

Congratulations and I hope it lasts!
