Hello everyone,

I have just started this diet as I have had a few recommendations from people I know and whilst I wait for a firm diagnosis I thought it was worth a try!! I need som help though:) What do people do for quick breakfasts? I am stumped! Also, people in the UK where do you get nut flour? Used in so many recipes and I can't find it:(

Hey Caz,

Was thinking about the nut flout aspect. There is a web company called flourbin.co.uk who do chestnut flour and others. See what you think of them...

Hope you get on ok on the diet. Its not one I have tried..

Thank you! I had been on Flourbin and found the Chestnut flour but wasn't sure if it was the same so I have emailed them:) I will just used ground almonds for a while and see how I go with that. Today has been ok and I have sent my OH out for a bread tin so I can bake some banana bread. Least this will teach me to cook ;)

I would like to know where to buy almond flour, and other nut flours. Is this the same as Ground Almonds? I see them in lots of American low-carb recipes that I really want to make!

Ground Almonds are what we call Almond Flour. Most supermarkets sell them in the Home baking section. Other Ground nuts are not so easy to obtain. I recommend Flourbin.co.uk. They carry ground, chopped and whole nuts as well as lots of other lovely stuff!

The other choice is to make your own. You do this by grinding the nuts yourself in a burr-style coffee grinder, blade-style tend to make Nut butters! You can use either roasted, blanched, or raw nuts depending on what you'll use them for. Blanched almonds work best for most almond-flour uses, but adding in a percentage of toasted almond flour gives a nice warm flavor. Almonds, pecans, macadamias, walnuts and hazelnuts make the best (and lowest carb) flour, but other nuts can be used as well. Keep unused nut flours refrigerated or frozen to avoid spoilage.

See what you think...

And this also....

Instructions
Step 1:
Pour frozen nuts (do not thaw first) in small batches into your food processor, grinder, or blender, and process in pulses until the nuts are rendered into a relatively fine powder.
Step 2:
Check the flour after a second or two, stirring frequently. Because of the nuts' high oil content, nuts tend to form nut butter. The transition from nut to meal to flour to butter is rapid, so work in short bursts, checking often.
Step 3:
Due to the high fat and protein content of flour made with nuts, it will spoil rapidly at room temperature. Store nut flours and meals in an air-tight container in the freezer. No need to thaw before using.
Tips & Warnings
For best results, add a small amount of wheat or gluten-free (not nut) flour to the nuts as you grind them to discourage them from turning to butter. The flour helps to keep the nuts light and powdery.
If desired, you can toast the nuts prior to grinding to enhance their flavor.
Exchange up to a quarter of the all-purpose flour called for in a recipe with nut flour.

So technically its possibile to make you own. Whether you want/need to go that far and phaff so much is up to you.. Hope it helps anyway.

theyre yummy! i used real eggs though, 2 large is about the same as the amount of substitute it calls for. just make em of time, refridgerate, and then heat in the microwave in the AM!

Hey,

Thank you for all that research Jan, you are a star:) I may try the making it flour myself thing (possibly over my Christmas holidays when I have time), am going to try baking banana bread with ground almonds tonight as I think it is pretty much the same thing and can't find anything that tells me otherwise!!

Kello, those quiche cups sound great so I will deffo try those! I have been ok the last few weeks so thought I should try the diet and see how I get on. I hope you are back on your feet soon and can try again:)

Thanks again

For breakfast on SCD I usually eat 2 boiled Omega 3 eggs and some strained 24 hour yoghurt with honey and a cup of tea; sometimes also a a banana...

Mazen, that is a good breakfast!! This morning I had a boiled egg and a banana mid morning:) I am hopefully going to buy a yoghurt maker this weekend so can start on that too. A general question....maybe obvious to some but as I go through this diet (I am only on Day 3) would you expect toilet habits to change? Mine got a little worse yesterday and I had bad pains in the evening...maybe my body getting used to the changes?

Thanks
Caz

You just need to give it some time. For me, it was only about 4 days when I felt more or less pain free; but I had only moderate pain then. Also I never had D, but only soft stools and I would usually go once a day or even sometimes only every 3-4 days. After sCd my stools became solid agin, but I still go only once every 2-4 days.

Hmmm, I am definitely feeling worse. Not at all sure why though. Start the day with a boiled egg and snack on fruit or SCD banana bread. Veg soup for lunch (made by me) and will have chicken and veg for my dinner. I am trying so hard!!

hey caz, sorry to hear youre feeling worse

gross, but can you identify anything in your poo? when i had first started, the almond flour was a big problem for me. i made the banana bread too and i was pooing it out for 4 days after i had eaten a piece.

maybe the flour i used was too coarse or maybe i was eating too much if it, but it was definitly casuing me problems.

Kello, can't really identlify anything although haven't looked too closely to be honest but I know I should as it may help!! I thought it might be lettuce but I didn't have any today. I have not been dilutting my fruit juice as yet so that could be it.....

It could be the almond flour though. I guess even with this diet it is still trial and error, my fault for looking for quick fixes to feel better:)

Fibrous vegetables may not be a good thing right now as fiber can irritate your bowels. If you do still eat them as with anything hard, chew it up very fine.

It could also be that you are reacting to something that you ate, I can't have some things that the diet says I should be able to have. Anything with seeds you want to cut the seeds out, those can irritate as well. Just from my personal experience. I'm on the diet and I'm on the verge of remission I think.

If you are just starting the diet, don't eat the nuts or seeds yet. It will irritate things for sure. The yogurt is key!

I always eat 2 eggs scrambled with cheddar cheese from the microwave and then I put my homemade ketchup on it! sounds gross, but tastes oh so good! Also, I have a couple of cookbooks (The Grain-Free Gourmet) that have EXCELLENT recipes in them.

I never really suffered from D, but the opposite problem....also had fissures on a regular basis. Been on the SCD for almost a year and a half, and feel oh, so much better!

It's good to know that others are on the diet as well. I've really tried to stick to it, and it has helped me immensely.
