Hi everyone. I've been using Humira for a year now. It is working very well, keeping Crohns symptoms to a minimum. However, for the last 6 weeks I've experienced severe hip pain approximately 2 days before each injection. (I take Humira every 2 weeks.) The pain stops within 24 hours after I inject.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? Thanks for your feedback!

It could be an extra intestinal manifestation (EIM) of CD. EIMs can involve eyes, skin, joints etc. Some joint EIMs run concurrently with active CD others run independent of active CD.

My son has JSpA(juvenile spondyloarthropathy) which can affect hip joints. It runs independent of active CD and needs to be treated with a biologic. Right now he is on Humira which is controlling his JSpA but not his CD. But its different for wveryone what works for which the best.

Maya142 has two girls with forms of joint disease and is a fount of information. Hopefully she will be by soon.

If you are consistently having joint pain right before the shots that is relieved by the next shot then it might be a good idea to see a rheumatologist that is familiar with the joint EIMs that go along with CD.

It could be some sort of arthritis. Do you have other symptoms: joint pain or swelling? Morning stiffness? Pain that gets better with movement? Those are all classic symptoms of inflammatory arthritis.

Both my daughters have Ankylosing Spondylitis. My younger one also has Crohn's. She is on Simponi, and the older one is on Humira. Both girls have had a lot of hip pain in the past, and the younger one has arthritis in many of her joints: spine, hips, elbows, fingers, knees, heels, toes, jaw, ribs etc.

Hip pain and SI joint pain are VERY common with Spondyloarthritis. This CCFA handout has a lot of good info about the various types of arthritis associated with IBD:http://www.ccfa.org/assets/pdfs/arthritiscomplications.pdf

If the hip pain persists, or if you have other joint pain, it might be worth seeing a rheumatologist.

Same with myself. The humira is absolutely knocking the AS out of the park, my back hasn't felt this good since I was 19. I'm not sure it's doing anything for the Crohn's, however, but I have to wait for an MRI to see if the ocassional pain I get is stricture from scarring and not inflammation (which I think it is, since prednisone still seems to make me feel better)

Hi! I thought I'd post an update for anyone interested in this topic. I talked with my Crohn's doctor about this problem with joint pain. I am now going to inject every 12 days instead of every 14 days. My doctor thinks that the Humira is wearing off at the 12-day mark.

Wishing good health to everyone!
