Hi, so I've been diagnosed with crohn's pretty recently ... At first just the stomach/bowel issues. I've had a few complications over the last month or so - mainly to do with an awful pain and stiffness in my neck and upper back/shoulders. It comes and goes but is always worse during the night and first thing on the morning. A few weeks ago it was so bad that I was actually taken into hospital but it seemed to have calmed down when they changed my medication to sulfasalazine. However after coming out in a huge rash and affecting my breathing I realised I was allergic to sulfasalazine ... Typical!! But now I've been put just onto pentasa. It seems to be working as far as the bowel is concerned but I wondered if anyone had any advice on how to help with the muscles/joints until I see my rheumotition? Once I get up and struggle around for an hour or so it seems to calm down, I also take paracetamol. My worry is that whilst it's incredibly frustrating now I don't know how I'm going to cope when I go back to work in the new year?? First time using a forum for this so any advice regarding this would be hugely appreciated!! Thank you!

Hi and welcome. Sorry your here tho. I fear joint pain is part n parcel of crohns. I suffer it myself as do many others. I cant seem to find any help from my gp with it. So il try my gastro doc at my appointment in jan n see what he says. Keep pushing for help as i do or you most likely will be brushed aside. Sad as that is,coz they really dont know how it is with crohns if they aint got it. I work full time with my pain, its not easy i can tell you. Hope you can get the help n meds you need . Best wishes n hugs 💕

Welcome. I have minor arthritis in my lower back. I am wondering if you could try a chiropody. I hope you get some relief soon. Keep us updated.

Joint pain can definitely be an extra intestinal manifestation(EIM) of CD. Some types run concurrent of active CD inflammation while others run independent of an active CD flare. Finding a rheumatologist with knowledge of the joint EIMs of CD is important.

My son has CD but also sees a rheumatologist because he has spondyloarthropathy and polyarticular arthritis both common EIMs of CD.
