Hi all

New here.
Has anyone out there ended up with short bowel syndrome (SBS) as a result of extensive surgery?

I have approx 1m of small bowel left and SBS as a result and would like to hear from anyone else with SBS for mutual support.

Hope to hear from you

Hi,
I don't have SBS, but I was amazed at the amount of small bowel you had removed. If you have 1m left, that means you had about 6m removed (or almost 20 feet). Was that a number of surgeries over many years?

Thanks for reply.

Yes multiple resections over 10 years - half small bowel removed in one go, then third of what was left and so on. No idea how much in total was removed but remaining has been measured via small bowel barium meals etc and was shown to be approx 1m. Most of colon remains - 1 resection removed bottom piece and part of rectum.

Unable to have ileostomy due to risk further surgery poses to small amount remaining.

You may be beyond all this but I know DustyKat's daughter has sbs and gets some relief from psyllium husks (the natural product only). Good luck Mrs. Sheen!!

Hi mrs sheen,

My daughter has had short bowel syndrome since a resection 4 & 1/2 years ago. She hasn't had near the amount of bowel removed that you have but unfortunately still didn't escape the consequences! She has over time been able to manage it quite well, took a while though, but it still does affect her choices when she is out quite considerably.

Take care, :)
Dusty

Thanks for all replies and what a supportive place this seems to be.
So as not to worry people with CD, my SBS was caused by resections for bowel obstructions and adhesions and not CD. It was thought that I may have CD due to symptoms but tests reveal that remaining bowel is disease-free but stuck in position in places making some treatments inappropriate (ie can't have fibre due to risk of obstruction).

Hi Dusty
Thanks for replying. Your daughter is young to be coping with this - what good news she is managing quite well.
Best wishes to you all
