Both Imuran and 6mp are thiopurines. They are very similar drugs. What is the opinion of the members here for expanding this subforum a little to cover 6mp as well?

A pro-drug is one that is metabolised, usually by the liver, into the drug you really want. So azathioprine is metabolised into mercaptopurine and something else. Pro-drugs are often chosen due to ease of manufacture and therefore cost, better absorption and bio-availability, tolerance - so it might not make you throw spectacularly. That sort of thing anyway.

I say yes but you should have a sticky at the top explaining the relationship between the two to prevent loads of threads asking or confusing people.

And in the sticky should be all the different names for each drug. I keep confusing my fiance because sometimes I'll say Mercaptopurine or 6MP or Purinethol. Too many names for one drug (that actually goes for all the drugs we take, too many names).

I say yes, because most people dont know there is a correlation of the drugs 6MP and AZA. Similar, but not the same.

My GI was not happy that I knew they were much the same as he tried to fool me.

But yes, for people on 6MP who dont realize...it may be very helpful.
