I was diagnosed with Crohns disease when 10 weeks pregnant with my 2nd son & was immediately put on (& kept on) Cortisone & Salazopyrin. My son was 3 weeks premature & weighed approx 3 kg or 6lb 4oz & was born by emergency caesarian due to me having a small & distorted pelvis
I had a flare up when son was 6 weeks old & was put on 50 mg of cortisone. I contacted son's Paediatrician & was told by his Locum that it was ok to continue breastfeeding. A week later (down to 35mg) he started projectile vomiting. I took him into Accident & Emergency & met up with his Paediatrician, who told me to stop breastfeeding immediately, which I did. His exact words were "a week at 30mg is dangerous" He was diagnosed as having reflux & put on formula & projectile vomiting stopped.
He is now 27 yrs old, and has suffered from ADHD, Aspergers Syndrome, had to have stents put in his ears up till the age of 11 due to shortened ear canals, does not have any adult molars, (still has his baby ones) & has recently been diagnosed with Keratonosis (scar tissue across his retinas).
Needless to say, I have often wondered (& felt guilty about) whether my taking Cortisone has caused all these problems with him.
I have advised him to tell his doctors about my taking the cortisone due to the Crohns Disease. I have apologised to him & explained that at the time, I had no choice for both of our sakes. But I still worry..... :confused2:
