I suffered from an infection in a cavity in the teeth (swelling, pain). The GP prescribed Cefadroxil (1000 mg/day) for 3 days. I have started having diarrhoea. Websites suggest this is a side-effect. Can someone throw some light?

Ronroush, thanks so much.

Sir, I live in small-town India. The doctor would not even pick up the phone at this hour. I called the nurse and she said that she was not aware of any side-effect, even after I had said that websites documented this.

For, the record, three months back I was bitten by a dog. I got no first-aid from anyone here. I know, this is probably irrelevant, but I expect more from this forum than anyone here.

Yes, diarrhea is a possible side effect. If you haven't already, just touch base with your doctor so they know what's going on.

I did that. The nurse told me not to bother coming to the clinic, and eat "curd-rice, bananas" and the diarrhea would hold. In any case, unless someone is really seriously ill, the physician does not examine anyone, so I did not go. Since I am not officially diagnosed, he hates if I talk of Crohn's and shoos me off.

You are able to gauge the extent of the "nurse's" knowledge when she said that Cefadroxil does not cause diarrhoea. Sir, this is a different world that I live in.

I went to the toilet once yesterday and had mushy stool.

Right. In that case I have to go to a hospital 10 km away and I am busy in the daytime on work. My options are really very limited. It is night now and everything is closed.

I think that's Duricef (brand name). My non IBD daughter had to take that for a throat infection, she did get diarrhea from it. The doc said it was a common side effect and suggested probiotics along with it. I'm not sure if it was the probiotics or just that her body adjusted but the diarrhea stopped before she finished out the prescription.
